so i was thinking about maybe a ph.d. in chemistry. i would love to do research and teach as a college professor. i was going to go into optometry but i just love chemistry more. do any of you have an idea of a GRE score i'd need to get into a really good school's ph.d. program? i'm going to be a sophomore this fall, does anyone know when i should start studying for it, like the verbal part and all? i know probably wrong website but if anyone knows please post i'd really appreciate it. thanks.

In my opinion, GRE scores are not weighted very heavily in getting accepted into a phd program. Nothing is more valuable than just having a decent GPA and also real research experience. Having a publication under your belt is tremendous help. My friend is getting her phd in microbiology soon, and didn't even have to take the GREs since she had so much experience doing research at UCSF.

You know if you go into optometry you could consider a phd in optometry too. Programs Offering PhD - UAB, UCBerkeley, Indiana, Univ. Houston, Ohio State, SUNY, Univ. Waterloo.

I have taken the GRE and it was not very hard at all. In a way you really can't study for the verbal part unless you plan on reading a dictionary. There are a lot of definitions of words that most people don't know on the verbal part. I would think that as long as you get around 1050 combined score from math and verbal you should be fine. I do agree that most schools don't put that much emphasis on the GRE score. If they do want it, they probably just want to make sure you don't totally bomb it.
