I haven't seen one of these for people offically going to Maryland, so defintely had to start one! Who else is going to Maryland??

This is my first posting ever, and I'm going to Maryland! I just mailed my $300.00 check on Monday. It was so exciting!
I'm originally from MD, but have spent the last 5 1/2 years in St. Louis going to school/working. I'm not incredibly familiar with B'more, so any advice on apartments and such is welcome!

I'm still crossing my fingers for UNC, but it's looking like Maryland for me. I'm pretty excited - when I went out there to interview, I stayed with a student and got a better look at student life than I would have otherwise. It was cool to see the camaraderie between the students traveling into downtown Baltimore every day. I'm pretty stoked for the new building as well.

Anyways, my deposit's going in the mail today.

I dont' know a whole lot about where the dental students live and stuff...I know on the website theres links to apmt buildings around the school. All the apartments look really nice though! there are ones that just opened called University Suites ( I think) that I went in after my interview and they're new and furnished. and theres all these apmts near the school that are renovated warehouses and have huge windows and ceilings...I loooved the apartments, it made me like the school even more!

I just sent my acceptance check a couple days ago and I'm also psyched about this school. Typo did you happen to stay in Owens Mills? Thats what I did and I was also impressed with the students there. I'm not sure where I'm going to live yet, if I want to make the commute or get a little place close to the school.

Yup, Owen's Mill was the place. That's probably where I'll live since it's a good family area, since lots of students with families live out there. Who did you stay with? The commute kinda sucks, but that's life. I guess it would be good for studying . . . or for catching up on Fantasy Football, like the guys I was with did. 🙂

I stayed with Bryce Carter (a fellow aggie). it did seem like a good family area, if I had a wife & kids that's for sure where i'd go but I'm still single - but I do have an awesome girlfriend and 8 months before I go so who knows? Is anybody considering the DDS/PhD program? I'm interested in it and wanted to do the summer research program but I need to stay here for the summer to get my degree.

I live in Baltimore and I was surpised that so many Dental students lived in Owings Mills, which I always considered far away. They commute together on the morning train. And apparently they don't mind.

But if you are single and no kids there are plenty of places to live in town if you prefer an urban setting. Alot of young professionals live around the inner harbor and there are cheaper places to live around MICA and Hopkins.

Although, you will probably find less distractions in Owings mills, so you grades will be better.

To all that have been accepted ... congrats! If you guys don't mind, could you please post your stats. I am really (top choice) interested in Maryland but I haven't heard anything back as of yet.

My stats are:

BS Chemical Engineering (Univeristy of Florida)
GPA: 3.3
DAT: 19/19/18
Lots of volunteering/work

Do you think I have a chance to get in? (oh yeah...Florida resident)

Here are mine:
BA Liberal Arts from Utah State University (graduate in August)
GPA: 3.75
Science:3.6
DAT: 20/19/19
Research Experience, Lots of Volunteering including various leadership positions

It seems like our stats aren't that much different, your gpa's lower but your major is a lot harder. Hopefully you'll hear something after the 15th!

Here are mine:

BS in Zoology (BYU)
GPA: 3.4 overall, 3.1 science
DAT: 24/24/23
Extracurriculars: Some service and 40 hours shadowing

I applied pretty early, too. Did you interview, Maski? If so, be patient, since it looks like several people are going to decline just on SDN, let alone people who don't post here. There should be a bunch of spots opening up this month.

My stats:

will be getting BS in Biology from Penn State
overall GPA: 3.5
science: 3.3
DAT: 20/20/17 (PAT)
I'm a PA resident, I think there are alot of out of staters...good luck!

Hey guys,

I have my interview at U of MD next week and I'm extremely scared, do you guys have any advice to give?
Also, do any of you guys know how many people Maryland interviews and how many of those they accept?

Thanks!

I'm not sure on the numbers. My interview went really well. He asked me what the last non-science or not class-related book I read was. He also asked me how he would remember me, like what makes me different than everyone else (I told him I had just made a candle out of a coconut shell I found in the atlantic ocean). My buddy who interviewed there said his didn't go as well - the interviewer was getting philosophical and it was kind of confusing. Just be relaxed, it's ok to take 5 or ten seconds in the interview to pause and think before you answer any "tough" or unexpected questions. Good luck!

About Maryland, great school...not so great area. I'm originally a Marylander about 30 minutes from the dental school I used to live, in Frederick...my parents got the heck out of Md and moved when I was 17 cuz their commutes were really awful...so much traffic and congestion in Md due to a long spout of democratic governance. However, now that Elrich is governor, perhaps things will change, and ROADS WILL ACTUALLY BE BUILT...that goes especially for the extension of I-270, which is badly needed. There is alot to do in Bmore, and inner harbor is beautiful at night, and of course there is alot of nightlife and DC is rather close, along with Frederick (a big historic area in Md)...if anyone needs info about the area PM me, I'd glady answer your questions, though Im not too familiarwith the school. Anywho, I'll be applying there only because its my home state...and I think I'd rather spend 4 years there then in Florida still...

thanks so much for your advice guys!
i'll let you know how it goes 😀

I think the area around the school isn't bad. It's much better than it was 10 years ago.The area has likely changed since you were last there.. Whats great about MD is that the Law, Med,Dental, Pharm, Nursing, schools are all located in the same area so the area is full of students.

I disagree with your political editorial, but won't address it.You should save that for the nuts in the Doctor's lounge forum.
