I am so excited and I feel so lucky!! They didn't get my check until Nov. 3 and I got the email about the phone interview today!!! Did anyone else have their phone interview scheduled for them? Mine was prescheduled?

Um, fly? MSP is a huge airport a $25 shuttle ride from downtown Rochester, and RST has 7 flights a day on NW (6 MSP, 1 DTW) and 4 a day on AA (ORD). Very easy.

I know... I know, it would be the easier way to do things. Unfortunately, I'd rather be eaten alive by cheetahs than have to fly somewhere. I'm very (irrationally) afraid of flying. 😳 👎

Everyone has their phone interview time and date selected for them.

If you have problems with flying, you might want to consider flying into Minneapolis and taking the shuttle instead of taking a connecting flight to Rochester. I heard from someone at an interview yesterday that the connecting flight is not a fun one :scared:

🙄 It's 17 min takeoff to landing. It's not bad.
i think the flight into rochester is henious strictly because it's such a small plane and it rocks violently when landing (wind storm when I interviewed).

Sooo, Nov 15th has come and gone and no word on whether more acceptances were handed out. Hopefully we'll have better luck maybe tomorrow (who knows, they told me only vaguely, "toward the middle of the month")!

So I called Mayo today and she wasn't aware of the 15th being a special day as it relates to ADCOM decisions. She said appointments are made throughout the month. Also she said 5 seats have been decided.

So hang tight guys.

thanks Y Marker for calling -- solves a lot of confusion. i DID think 15th was a special day and woudl jump out of my seat in class each time my phone vibrated. Well, now I can live every day in such anxiety....greaaaaat...lol. gluck to everyone!!

Mayo's admission process is so weird. Probably a result of such a small class size.

recent news from mayo? more seats taken?

It's been n a month now and no ranking email yet - cause to be concerned?

I think an email to jane or a call to the admin office wouldn't hurt, they always seem eager to answer questions. I got my ranking email within 2 weeks.

Also, I think we have our first SDNer with an acceptance (just checked the acceptances thread)!!

Lets hope this week brings some good news to the rest of us as well....

Just talked to Mayo since I interviewed a month ago and haven't heard anything yet (no ranking email, etc.)...

Apparently they are running behind because of the holiday (which hasn't happened yet so that's sort of confusing) but they didn't have a meeting last week, so the next one will be Nov. 30 and again on Dec. 7 so those who've interviewed but haven't been ranked should get notified around those dates...

But then they don't make appointments at that meeting. So if you are on hold or accepted or rejected, they won't tell you for even awhile after that.

Keep waiting! Waiting waiting waiting....

got an invite for a phone interview just now (3am)! weird..

but i have to reschedule it cuz im gonna be on a flight back from india at that time. hopefully they play nice.

btw, is a jan 2nd phone interview really late or what?

A bit late...but honestly don't worry...I applied late, interviewed late and still got in somehow (anyone who tells you they know how they got into mayo is kidding themselves, it is a whacky process). There will still be slots open in March and while there are obviously no longer 34, there is more importantly still a chance because seats are open. I'm sure the people in admissions will work with you given the situation as it sounds like you've got a reasonable excuse. I am a bit surprised they are scheduling phone interviews that far in advance though, but with the holidays who knows. Best of luck to you and everyone waiting to hear from MMS this cycle.

Rejected! this morning at 3 am...

I got an email yesterday (11/29) at around 10am offering on-site interview...

does anyone know about how many they interview onsite during a given cycle? I know there were earlier post about the paucity of telephone interviews this year... but not much in the way of info about on-site stuff?

btw my phone interview was 11/16 at 2:00 pm, in case anyone wants to know...

thanks y'all

Mike

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think they interview about 200 people for 36 spots. I have my onsite tomorrow! eek!

I interviewed on Monday and they said that they invite about 240 people onsite for either 34 or 36 spots (I'm not sure which is correct). The other 4-6 slots are for MD/PhDs and the remaining 2 slots for MD/oral surgery candidates. We had 9 interviewees in our group (10 were scheduled but 1 either no-showed or cancelled)

42 - 6 MD/PhD - 2 MD/DDS = 34 Regular MD.

I think in past years they've accepted ~80 students to fill the 42 spots. So ~1/3 post interview are accepted, if 240 are interviewed.

Pretty standard.

Actually they told us on Monday that they only accepted 54 to fill 42 spots...and the # 1 reason for people to decline was the weather, #2 was that it isn't affiliated with an academic institution. Talk about a good return on offers!

no, they didn't say

Mike,

Just curious when you had sent in you fee. I am trying to find a rough time line for how long it takes from your fee being processed to receiving an email.
Thank you and congrats.

Has anyone received the "ranked" email within the last few days? 😕

Yeah, I got mine on Thursday evening. So now its just more waiting more waiting.

I interviewed on October 23.

I wonder when the bulk of the acceptances will go out.

Did everybody get this exact list for the phone interview or do they change it up?

Why do you want to be a Mayo Graduate?
Have you ever turned a difficult situation into a positive?
Is it important for a doctor to have humility?
On a scale of 1 to 10, how humble are you?
Is it important for doctors to practice what they preach?
How do you stay healthy?
Have you ever started a new business?
Have you ever improved an organization?
Have you ever made people work harder?
Would you spend more time with a difficult patient or one that follows orders?
How would you handle a patient that does not want to follow your orders?
Would you ever give up hope on a patient?
Have you come to terms with your own mortality?
Do you ever spend time alone? What do you think about when you're alone?
Do you prefer to work alone or lead a group of people?
Have you ever been a patient?
Is there anything else you'd like to add?

me too. it seems they've given out only 5 acceptances since october, they seem to be holding back for some reason. I think I got their admissions process figured out though:

I think the committee rank will be used to make sure you pass a certain cut off, ie, that the majority of people on the adcom think ur worthy. Then from a pool of those beyond the cutoff, the adcom picks and chooses people based strictly on how they would form a well rounded medschool class. I remember Jane repeated a couple times that they want to have a well rounded class, and that also explained why there was no ranked waitlist, and that people would be taken off the waitlist to fill the position of someone in that well rounded group.

This is different from what I earlier understood as being ranked meaning there is some sort of heirarchy, and that people would constantly be selected from the crust.

in sum, this is all mindless speculation that I like to busy myself with during this painful waiting process. Who knows what's really going on. I told my family that if I get in, I really want to be a part of the adcom my fourth year, mostly out of shear curiosity on how the process actually works.

this is pretty right on. remember not to prepare too much. when I interviewed, Jane said they can tell when people have prepared within a minute or two.

My timeline is this...

'fee received' email sept 27 -> 'request for letters and schedule telephone interview' email on oct 25 (my letters were available to them as of oct 2 via virtual evals) -> telephone interview 11/16 -> on-site interview offer 11/29 (have to wait till monday to schedule it because the person in charge of this is out of town - i think it will be for some time in january)

also - since my last post asking about number of interviews, etc, I found this page on their website about last year's process http://www.mayo.edu/mms/profiles.html

Total Applications Received: 2,375

Minnesota Applicants: 246
Male: 134
Female: 112

Out-of-State Applicants: 2,129
Male: 1,182
Female: 947

Total Applications Processed: 1,359

Total Telephone Interviews: 331

Total On-Campus Interviews: 224

Number of Matriculates: 42
Male: 22
Female: 20
Minnesota Residents: 10
Arizona Residents: 4
Florida Residents: 1
Under-represented Minorities (9.5 %): 4

Average Cumulative G.P.A.: 3.80
Average Total MCAT: 32.6

...SO that was helpful of them to post 🙂

And, just because this is the most recent topic of discussion in the thread - I prepared a medium amount for the telephone interview. I looked over the questions and even wrote a note or two for each (i think better when i physically write things down). I got most of the ones i expected... but there were one or two curveballs as well. What I did NOT do was plan answers nd read them off... I am glad though that I had an idea of what to say - the 30 minutes goes by really fast (and, to make it worse, my phone wasnt working the day of my interview and I missed/dropped the first 3 calls from mayo and only had 22 minutes to run through the questions) If i hadnt had an idea what to say, I would have never been able to finish (i remember her saying ok - we have 2 minutes for the last 8 questions - of 24)😱

in conclusion - know what you want to say at least a little, but DO NOT plan full answers and read them off a page (I didnt have what I had written in front of me during the phone interview on purpose, so i wouldnt be tempted to try that)

good luck to all,
Mike

Why is there such a huge difference between applications received and processed? What does processed include?

Hi! I was in your interview group. I remember you because you were the one with the cute accent. I am the girl from Arizona. We should probably mention they told us the admissions committee is 40 people behind on the ranking.

Glad you made it home safe.

Actually, the website is a little outdated so I think those are the stats from the class that entered in 2004, but they still seem pretty close.

Which SD? San Diego? South Dakota? Some Diner?

I guess thats for me to know and for the ADCOM's who read these boards to find out...😎
just kidding it is San Diego, I graduated from UCSD last June.

I just set my interview date - any last minute suggestions before I go in January? Execpt try not to freeze to death, everyone I know already told me that one 😀

anybody know jane's e-mail adress? She told me to e-mail her about an intent to take a pre-req, but I can't find it on the website anywhere.

I sent the email address so no need to post it here; I don't think that would be kind to Jane.

Mike- My SD is San Diego too! I don't know why I am excited by that. Anyway, if you are staying at the Kahler you can hang your starbucks order on the knob of your hotel room along with your breakfast order. That way you are well fed and awake. I recommend the oatmeal. Have fun, everyone is REALLY nice (even the other interviewees...I think they pre-screen for kindness).

I got booted from the Mayo wait list for 06 admissions the day they started class. Kind of a bummer, but things I found out afterwards might have helped. Mayo has some strict policies on dress and appearance. No facial hair, no flashy shiny watches and you wear a suit practicaly all the time. Now me, I showed up to my interview with a shiny silver watch, a shiny tie tack, a beard and during the course of the intervew was asked what I thought about wearing a suit, to which i replied "it's not in my nature but I put it on when I have to". I would not recommed doing these things--if you search their web site there is a document about this dress code stuff somewhere. Mayo is a very odd, very amazing place. I got into a top 10 school that I am paying very little for, and still mayo feels like the one that got away. Good luck to ya all.

See now this is why SDN is so great - where else could you get this kind of very important/ detailed type of advice? Thanks for the tip melissa. I am going the cheaper route and staying with a student, but hopefully someone else who can afford a hotel reads this and takes your advice.
p.s. - i love oatmeal - it is healthy, filling, and delicious

Thanks to you too trail boss - fortunately for me (I suppose) I am 22 but can shave every other day or so and still look clean - (I have what is commonly known as a baby face 😀) So i suppose I will fit right in!

When they called me for my phone interview I was still asleep😛 I woke up to my cell phone ringing at 8:30 AM after sleeping at 6:00 AM just over 2 hours before😛

And yeah, I knew it was coming, but I had stuff to do. Man, I don't even remember what I said to her😛

No problem Mike, good luck.

I also was asleep for my phone interview. The call was at 7am. I think it actually helped because I couldn't over think and gave very honest answers.

Did anyone have a phone interview recently? How long did they say it will take to inform you about an onsite interview?

I had mine on December 5, and I think she said around 3 weeks, which is December 26. Are admissions offices open around that time, or should I expect to get a response (if any) after New Years.
