Mayo clinic Pediatrics question

I am trying to understand why mayo clinic pediatrics residency program is not popular among us? any reviews...? I heard that there are so many international medical graduates there? I am couples matching and want to find out more about the pros and cons of taking up a pediatric residency program there...any inputs please...

I just got back from there and I must say it is a fantastic program. Very strong in research. Many of the residents publish before finishing residency and the goal of the residency director is to have everyone publish AND present at the national peds conference before finishing residency. They also have an excellent track record in matching into the top fellowship programs in the country. Over half go into subspecialty training; rest go into general peds. As for international trained grads, there at least 2 in each class. There's a reason for this. The Mayo brothers who founded the institution stated they wanted to promote diversity in their training program, so the residency makes it a point to take 2 IMG a year. Mayo also prefaces that these are the best IMG applicants in the country.

thanks but I am still wondering....if its top notch then why is not so much sought after like CHOP, boston children's WashU or hopkins?..... by american grads....

I am a resdent at Mayo. I am an american grad and this program was my top choice. I could write all day about why I love it and how it was the best fit for me. I too as an applicant, and still now as a current resident, wonder why this is not a "popular" choice with the SDN crowd.

I think, unfortunately, Mayo is at a disadvantage because it is in Rochester, Minnesota. It was a major reason for ME wanting to come here--cost of living, commute time (ZERO!), housing costs, friendliness. We're not exactly in the middle of a booming metropolis here. But I assure the ones who are interested--I love rochester, I moved here from a large Metro area and do not regret it.

The staff is approachable and I learn lots every day. I see bread and butter peds and the "Mayo Specials." I would feel comfortable going into gen peds or a fellowship. The program is very good to us and I am extremely happy.

If anyone has any specific questions I would be happy to answer them. I am not always on SDN so forgive me if I'm slow.
