I just received the following e-mail:

Good morning. We are very pleased to let you know that we expect official notification any day that Mayo will become the next NIH-funded MSTP program beginning July 1 of this year. Over the past several years we have worked very hard to improve our program, and this award recognizes that the quality of education we provide is on a par with the top MD-PhD programs in the nation.

This was Mayo's second attempt to gain MSTP status.

I have an acceptance there I was ready to decline, but now I am inclined to think more strongly about them.

I didnt apply there but I'm just curious how many slots they have per year

They have 6 MD/PhD students each year. I don't know how many will be MSTP as they have not announced that yet.

I'm actually shocked to hear that they weren't MSTP. I guess I always just kind of assumed.

It's a great place, no doubt about it. There's a guy from my school who's a 2nd year (I think) MD/PhD there, and another who's a 3rd year MD. They love it, but I guess, personally, the only problem is Rochester, Minnesota....

Yeah, my two problems with the place are the location and that they are not MSTP. Whoops, now they are MSTP. So, can I get over the location? Probably not, but I still need to go to some other second looks to be sure.

About their students being happy... Is there anywhere the students are unhappy? I sure haven't met any. Even the students who aren't trying to recruit students on interview day try to sell their schools always. At alot of schools I was told, "Go where the students are happy! Our students are happy here!"... They're always happy. That's one way to choose schools down the drain.

To answer your questions . . . yes. When I was interviewing at the OHSU MD/PhD program (which also officially is an MSTP now), the students (all four that were willing to meet with us) were depressed and had gloomy looks on their faces. They weren't very enthusiastic about us being there and they didn't do a good job of recruiting.

In regards to Mayo, do you plan on doing a second look sometime in the future? I wasn't planning on it since I got a geat look at the interview. I've already accepted a seat and withdrawn my other acceptances. Oh, by the way, I think they're only taking five students this year.

Yeah, OSHU isn't a MSTP. I guess I should amend my original question and ask, "is there any MSTP where the students are unhappy?" I find this is the same for MD programs as well. I hear stories once and awhile of unhappy MD students, but everyone I've met personally has been a super-cheerleader of their institution.

About Mayo, if I decide (and I will by the middle of April) that I am really interested, I might come back for a second look in early May before decision time. I'm always happy to do the wine and dine thing on someone else's dime. Not that I would do this to a program I wasn't really considering.
