Mayo (MN/FL) ($25k/year scholarship)
Pros
- Highly individualized support from faculty
- Endless research opportunities
- Unique curriculum (18 month pre-clinical, flexible time (max 6 months) to study for Step 1 and do research, finish clinicals earlier than most curriculums so 4th year is very self-driven)
- Name speaks for itself

Cons
- Being from Florida, concerns over adjustment to Rochester, being very far away from home for 18 months
- Small program in Jax and relatively young med school so not too many match lists to compare (IM for 2023 and 2022: Mayo (FL), Duke, Penn, WashU, Kaiser)
- Small class size and even smaller in Jacksonville (more of a social consideration)
- Unsure of reputation of Mayo FL vs Mayo Rochester

University of Florida COM (~30k/year In-state)
Pros
- Strong reputation in the Southeast where I would prefer to live
- Close to home and support system
- Bigger class size (social consideration and quality of life)

Cons
- Maybe limited research opportunities in more niche specialities (heard from current student about scarcity of Plastics research, e,g.)
- Might be limited to SE schools and harder for competitive specialties in the match
- Otherwise no major glaring cons besides the difference in reputation between Mayo and UF, which I'm not sure about anyways

---

Primary concern is whether the difference in quality and accessibility of opportunities/match potential/reputation between Mayo and UF is worth the potential drawback of the location and small class size of the former. Would love any advice and opinions from current applicants and current medical students. Thank you!

Currently deciding between Mayo (MN/FL track) and UF. Due to scholarship from Mayo and in-state tuition from UF, the cost is about the same. Have yet to attend second look days at both institutions which will help the decision, I am sure. Primary concern with Mayo is moving to Rochester for M1 and M2 (although this is only 18 months with the curriculum set-up), and whether the difference in quality and accessibility of opportunities/match potential/resources between Mayo and UF is worth the potential drawback of the location and small class size of the former. Would love any advice and opinions from current applicants and current medical students.

In my opinion, the drawbacks of Mayo would be well worth the universally recognizable brand-name and the insane match list:

UF is as good as mayo in just about every specialty. I wouldn’t go for the name alone.

Rochester is really cold.

HB 731 in Florida has a high potential to pass and would ban all P/F courses, so it’s very likely both preclinical and clinical components of UF would have letter grades.

This is another major point in Mayo’s favor IMO, as the 1.5 year preclinical would still be P/F!
