Anyone know what the moonlighting situation is at Mayo?

I don't think they have in-house moonlighting, but they do allow you to moonlight elsewhere (it's a reasonable drive to the Twin Cities and other nearby community hospitals). At my interview, I remember hearing that they actually encourage people to moonlight at Hennepin so that they can get some inner-city ER experience. But after doing rotations at a psych-heavy ER in Chicago and a similar one in New Orleans, I'm not sure how much more I can learn from a night full of "Haldol + Ativan and admit under psych" and "U-tox, Mucomyst, and admit under psych" and "Oh, he's a frequent flyer... he just wants a sandwich and a warm bed."

Nice to hear there's some Minneapolis options. I don't remember hearing much about it. I think I brought it up during the dinner and didn't get much commitment on an answer.

ED moonlighting sounds like it'd be pretty chill. Wonder what it pays.

Don't quote me, because I'm not in the program, so I'm not sure how the setup works exactly. But I do think there is some "in house" moonlighting available, in house in the sense of being within the Mayo system. I know of two psych residents that did some moonlighting in either Austin MN or Albert Lea, MN. I can't remember what the hourly rate was though and I want to say there was some reimbursement for travel to get there as well. That was like 2 years ago.

Obviously check with someone more in the know if that info is still current, but in general for quite a few programs Mayo does try to make moonlighting opps available.

I know they have great rads moonlighting. I wonder if they'd look at me strange if I tried to get in on that.

from my interview last year there were options in mpls and austin, mn. whether theyre technically in the mayo system didnt matter to me since its a 20min + drive for either one. if i'm working extra hours i dont want to add in 45 minutes of driving when i'm sleep deprived

I think the "in Mayo" system matters for some people for malpractice coverage. Agree that sleep is precious though, but it seemed like quite a few people took advantage of it and travel was reimbursed also, so maybe it's not as bad as it sounds to drive there? I'll see if I can find someone to get more info from.

I wouldn't mind using it as an excuse to spend a weekend in the city and take call over a weekend...

not sure about the laws in minnesota, but it's important to point out that many states have different moonlighting options for imgs and amgs. This is because many states will grant an unlimited medical license(which you need to moonlight) to pgy-2 level AMGs but will grant a restricted license of sorts to imgs until the 4th year to imgs...
