I'm considering a transfer to the Mayo program in Rochester. I know it's a fairly new program established in 1999. Has anyone heard anything good or bad about this place? Any feedback or help appreciated.

Right now the only open spots I know of in the country are at Mayo, Baton Rouge, and Detroit (which one of my colleagues it taking), so options are limited.

I dont think the new programs will be doing anything to help this but... Veers have you contacted them anyhow to see if they might open up a class. I mean could you imagine all the folks from MLK going to Vegas (or one of the other new programs?) Good luck man..

Actually the Vegas program was one of the first ideas that crossed my mind, as their PD is a graduate from King/Drew EM. She was very sympathetic to the idea, but after discussing it with her department chair, they concluded that they could not take upper level residents this year.

Gainesville has been a little more receptive, as they agreed that they can possibly take upper level residents, however I haven't heard directly from their PD yet. I will try to call them this week, since my last e-mails apparently went into oblivion. If Gainesville would take us, I have at least 3 PGY-2 residents who are willing to go there.

I guess I should give you guys a status update on the program here.

So far no firm decision has been made regarding our fate. On Thursday, ACGME voted to plan withdrawal of accreditation from Drew University, which effectively means an end to all residencies as of July 1 (when the money runs out). Drew has the option of appealing this decision and coming up with a new plan in January.

I spoke with the RRC director for Emergency Medicine. He sounds very frustrated with the whole situation, and says they haven't reached a decision. Apparently some sort of decision will be made on Friday of next week by ACGME concerning the short-term fate of all residents at Drew (i.e. immediate closure). At the point that decision is made, the RRC can then discuss options with the program director of each residency. Best case scenario, is that next Friday the ACGME will vote to close all residencies immediately, which will give the RRC leverage to find us spots within Los Angeles. This is the best solution because it will end the fighting, and get us all into some sort of stability.

If RRC does not decide to immediately close the program next week, then I have no choice but to leave. One month of uncertainty and fighting between all the various agencies is too much for me and I need some stability. It sounds like Drew will fight this, and potentially continue the chaos through July 1st, as they stand to lose their medical school and a lot of funding if they do not.

I'm at Mayo and love it! We had a PGY-2 bail for anesthesia and have an open slot. The trauma won't be what you are used to (but we still get some) but the academics would, I would think, give you a great CV (i.e., "I've done the 'county thing' at Drew AND the 'ivory tower' thing at Mayo"). While, in truth, we are not the "ivory tower", everyone thinks we are. I've met with a fantastic reception on the job hunt because of the Mayo name.

PM me.
