Could people please share their insights into Mayo residency program? In particular, I am interested how it compares with other top-notch programs in the country. many thanks.

Not having interviewed at other top notch programs, I can only tell you my impressions of my interview. I matched elsewhere, but would have been happy to match there.

I thought that it was a great program with fantastic opportunities in just about every subspecialty. But, I don't think that it is everyone's cup of tea. A big determinant is whether you fit into their subculture.

Though Mayo has some of the most impressive resources I've seen anywhere, I thought that call for their interns on psych was very tough as much of what they were doing was social worker scut without much support.

Another downside for some people is the location. This wasn't an issue for me.

When I interviewed there and spoke with the residents and one of the "consultants" who taught psychotherapy, I didn't really get the feeling they were neglecting it. For example, Hopkins appeared to be much more biological (at least from my interview trail impression and talks with residents) than Mayo. Honestly, I felt like Mayo was one of the strongest programs, and if it wasn't in rochester and I hadn't lived in a small city for the past four years during med school, I would have definitely put it first.
