Mayo Scottsdale

Anyone have any information on this program? I know it's new... Thanks!

The correct name is Mayo Arizona (the hospital is actually in Phoenix, not Scottsdale).

The hospital gets patients from all over the states, lots of snowbirds from up north come here for procedures. The OR is expanding soon, as is the hospital. Lots of variety - hearts (including transplant/artificial), livers, kidneys etc. Lots of regional exposure, residents are busy knocking blocks out before the ortho cases. The doctors are always finding new and innovative methods to secure the airway in difficult patients.

The atmosphere cannot be beat - the lifestyle in phoenix/scottsdale/tempe is second to none. Everybody was VERY happy, attendings willing to take on students under their wing and involve them in research projects. I think all call is from home (not a trauma hospital), the residents get to see all sorts of challenging cases since there is no competition from anyone else. Lots of time with attendings, the program has a lot of CRNA's which are mostly very friendly (some are married to anesthesiologists or have kids planning on becoming anesthesiologists).

Downside: The program is small (which can be good or bad) with only 3 residents - its probably very competitive. The program farms out OB, Peds, ICU and some others - either in AZ or Rochester. I don't have a problem with that, but some people like to do it all in one location. Didactics are somewhat informal, as there are only 3 residents.
