Mayo Telephone Interview Request!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just an observation but this is the 2nd wave of Mayo phone interview emails -- exactly 2 wks. apart. I rec'd my phone interview on Mon.8/2 & then today, 2 wks. later, a new batch of those emails go out. Interesting system! Now I wonder if during the 2 wk. cycle Mayo will decide the fate of each group of phone interviewees from the previous cycle. If that's the case, then maybe those of us who have the 1st round of phone interviews may get a status update today -- invite to Rochester????

just got the phone interview invite. 👍

just got an email inviting me for an onsite interview..yay!! my phone interview was on Aug. 4 =)

damn, congrats! thats awesome, i'm still praying for a phone interview

i just got the boot!
for those interested i'm well above the 67 thing

Mayo does indeed seem to be on a 2 week on Mondays cycle. Anyone else who got word that the $$ was in on Aug 2 hear anything one way or the other yet? Hmmm, maybe no email invite today means the "letter" is on its way.

I got word about the $$ being in on Aug 4 and have also not heard anything. I guess we probably have a letter in the mail or will hear in another 2 weeks?

I talked to a friend who did summer research for two years at Mayo...and he said they use GPA*10+MCAT and you're in good shape if you're >= 67....

Although I'm not applying to Mayo...and I have no clue other than his word if this is true or not...plus they may adcoms could be doing this differently this year than in the past...so take that little tidbit with a very large helping of salt.

wow...I guess this was a whole bunch of cow dung then...I can't BELIEVE some of you people with your awesome #s didn't get a secondary from Mayo 😕 ...sorry to mislead people...good luck to all those waiting!

I also was notified on Aug 2nd that they got my $$ and haven't heard anything since then!

Just out of curiosity....of those of you that already had your phone interview, did any of you use a cell phone, or did you all use a land line? If you did use a cell phone, did it work out ok or did you have some problems with the connection? I'm always worried about making important phonecalls with a cell phone, because you never know what might happen 🙄

I felt it would be risky to use my cell phone, so I set up a land line in my house specifically for the phone interview (yet another expense of applying to med schools...)

I used cell phone -- out of necessity -- I am in a research lab for the summer and not at home. It worked out fine, no problems -- and I have an on-site interview in Sept.

bump. still waiting for a phone interview or rejection. anyone else in the same boat? they recieved my $$ on 8/2.

i heard through the grapevine that they have only done the phone interview with a small number of people (~50) and plan to do phone interviews with 600 all told...my friend was told that when he called mayo to schedule his phone interview. so I think no response yet does not mean a rejection at all..good luck to everyone waiting! 😀

I got a phone interview email this morning! 🙂

Be sure to post when you're headed up to Rochester and I can try to keep an eye out for ya during your on-site interview (my place is a dump, so I'm not subjecting any poor soul to my hosting  )! Hi! When I called Mayo to set up my on-site interview in Sept. I asked about the "host" program and they hadn't set it up yet. I guess I should call them back so that I can stay with a med student -- did you sign up recently? Thanks for any information -- I'll be taking the shuttle from the Minneapolis airport to Rochester & need the night of Sunday 9/26.

Does Mayo contact you to request that you submit your application fee or do you just send it in with your amcas? I haven't been able to find the answer on their website. Thanks for any help.

Good luck!!!

I read somewhere that it is good to stand up during a phone interview. You must breathe better and come across more clearly. Also, another advise was to have a mirror and to glance at it and smile while talking.

This is a good one
Take a sheet of paper and make three columns.
Title the first column
Problems faced

Title the second column

What you did to correct the problem

Third column

The result.

You list as many of these as you can and then when it is time for the interview you don't have to think back.

well that was a weird interview...

no idea how it went quite honestly...it's so strange not to get any feedback..i really don't think i answered all the questions that well (especially the have you ever turned a negative situation into a positive one recently), but i guess i gave it my best shot.

if it's meant to be, i'll hear from them again in 3 weeks.

after my interview, i was told i'll hear from them in 7 to 10 days... 😕

Yes, I definitely heard back, after the phone interview, in about 1-1/2 wks later. The people are SO nice at Mayo -- I had set up an on-site interview for September & then yesterday they sent me an email asking me if I would like to stay with a current med student. I know lots of schools do this but it usually means that the applicant has to track it down rather than the school send special invites for just that reason! Again, after talking to some of the admin people are various med schools setting up interviews, dealing with Mayo people is like a "breath of fresh air"!! Good Luck to you post- phone interview! Hope you hear soon!

I got one today, so maybe there will be another wave.

just received my phone interview request on 9/7...what percentage of applicants receive the telephone interview? I read someone say 15 %, but is it really that low?

I felt the same way after mine last year. I called my parents and said that I could kiss Mayo goodbye, because I had such a weird feeling after it.

I ended up getting in actually. Mayo (everything about it ? classmates, teaching, personal attention, etc.) is phenomenal, and you should definitely not lose hope yet. PM if you have any questions about the school, Rochester, etc.

Last year the did an onsite interview with 314/2417 applicants = 13% according to Usnews. I would think they would weed out more than 2% in the phone interview, but what do I know.

Thanks for the stats. Does anyone know what percentage of phone interviewees get on-site interviews?

So about ten percent of applicants receive the phone interview and out of those 2/3 receive the on-site interview. Good luck y'all!

efex101,
Does Mayo get back to you about an on-site interview after the phone secondary either way--i.e. definitely notify you that you've got an interview invite or definitely notify you that you've been rejected? Or do they leave you hanging and you have to assume you've been rejected? Thanks.

thanks for the info guys, it's comforting to know they invite 2/3 of the people to do an on-site interview after the phone interview...i called mayo today and the earliest interview date at this point in time is late october...so if any of you have gotten the invite for the phone interview, don't hesitate to schedule it, get it done ASAP.

I had the phone interview recently, and they state that they will certainly email you one way or the other in 2-3 weeks.

Yes, they usually will let you know within two weeks regarding onsite interview IF your LOR's are in. They will not invite you for interview until they have seen your LOR's...so if you have not heard for some time check to see on the status of letters...
