I have narrowed my options down to Mayo versus Duke. Any suggestions? Both program directors are so nice. Both programs are wonderful. Mayo is cold; Duke is near a beach. Mayo has a warm feel, though. Any help would be appreciated as the ROL deadline is approaching.

HA!! If only I liked either, but I don't!!

Duke is near a beach?

Duke is not near the beach, but is about 2 hours from the beach. Easy distance for a day trip, May through October. If you like to be outside, you will definitely appreciate that there are lots of sunny days, and more months with good weather than not.

I'm just a student, but after doing my clerkship and an elective, I was very impressed by their psych program. The faculty members are excellent mentors, the residents are smart and supportive. Great variety of clinical experiences, good patient diversity. Durham is not Boston or New York (as has been stated in these forums over and over), but I imagine it's a much funner place to live than Rochester. there are tons of restaurants, a good music scence, beer fest, Durham Bulls baseball, fun affordable neighborhoods near the hospital. Within Duke, I think the psych department is either 1st or 2nd in terms of funding for research . . . considering it's Duke, that's really saying a lot.

Obviously, I know nothing about Mayo, so I can't compare.

Two VERY different cultures. I imagine that Durham is a more-or-less liberal island in a conservative state, whereas Rochester is a conservative island in a formerly-liberal state.

Rochester is only about 75 minutes from Minneapolis-St. Paul, so you're covered for restaurants, concerts, sports, etc. (Closer than Duke is to "the beach!" 😉 And Minnesota is the land of 10,000 lakes. )

Personally, I think that Mayo is only about the third best psych residency in the state...but I am partial to the upper midwest, myself. And hey, with global warming and all, it's only getting better!

very good point. i do have to admit, as a transplanted northerner living in NC, the heat waves in august can be a bit much . . . and i'm so disappointed we haven't gotten *any* snow this winter. it's going to be 70 tomorrow.

but you're right about the Durham-Chapel Hill area being the liberal oasis. it's also the Yankee oasis. so for me, the culture clash wasn't as clash-y as i was expecting.

okay, well, the sun is shining, so I'm heading out for a jog now! 😉

Did you state Mayo is the third best psych residency in the state of Minnesota or the states Of America?

I don't know anything about Mayo, but when I visited Duke, definite pros were the PD (incredibly nice and committed), the happiness of the younger residents (the older ones seem to have been overworked, but this issue has apparently been rectified), and the overall excellence in clinical training. The family therapy training, with a feedback team of attendings and residents behind a glass mirror and pre- and post-session processing, was fantastic. The weather in Durham also can't be beat!

Cons were weak child training (residents go to UNC), and Durham not being a big city (although these would be definite pros for some people! EBM is also a huge focus at Duke, which also could be a pro and a con.

Hope this helps! 🙂
