MBA help?

Saw some archives of those with the dual degree. It looks tempting. I'd like to know if having an MBA really gives one that much of an advantage anymore?

I don't know how much more stressful the dual credit would be compared to just getting a pharmd.

I mean, I am doing triple majors in UNDERGRAD. Its tough, but if I do better with my studying, its not that tough. Pharm school is gonna be much tougher. And I don't even know how difficult MBA alone is.

dime a dozen. dont bother. if you go to a great school for an MBA, you won't be doing pharmacy, you will be doing something else that is way more money generating and gratifying.

Up to you. But really, it can be done part-time after grad. I'm looking into several part-time MBA opportunities atm. Problem with them is the tuition.

In terms of advantages, obviously, if you want management type opportunities, I'm sure MBA can open some windows. move up the chain etc etc

If you want to be a director or in management, an MBA is a requirement in many cases. I'm planning on getting one online eventually...then moving to management...

No. You can get them through many reputable schools. The key is looking for regional or AACSB accreditation. Here's a list of such schools. It's equivalent to one you earn in person if you go through the right school. I'm going to go to a name school. If I have a degree from Texas A&M or Mississippi State, I don't think it would be questioned...

Now University of Phoenix...no...stay away...

Actually my pharmacy schooling is cheaper because of my dual degree. The first three years I pay as pharmD student, then my 4th year i pay as an MBA grad student.

I dont understand what you all are talking about...in what world could it hurt you to have an MBA? If the OP is even considering it then they are obviously interested in management at some point in their career.

Agreed, MBAs can be very useful and also extremely flexible if you earn them online.

If you Google around and make sure to only look for accredited schools, it could be worth your while. Example of some accredited online MBA programs.

I think what Aznfarmerboi and PharmaTope are saying is that, for the MBA degree, prestige is everything. There is no other field other than business where what school your MBA was obtained matters the most. Unlike pharmacy, where a pharmD is exactly that (as of now anyway), an MBA from a lower tier is not seen as good as a top tier. I'm sure you know this though. So unless you get an MBA from a top 20 school then it is a "waste of money". And as far as I know, there is not top 20 school that offers a dual pharmD/MBA.

Yes I know there are lots of people that are successful with dual PharmD/MBA degrees or MBAs from lesser known schools. But in the business world where almost everyone and their mom has a MBA, a Wharton degree is better than xyz.

Is that really the case, getting an MBA from a reputable university is far more advantageous than "just an MBA from a business school"? Not all MBA programs require GMAT for admissions, a GRE is enough in some cases, so my question is: if a university requires GMAT for MBA admissions, does that make them a strong school with a strong curriculum?

It will no doubt open doors and give you an edge if you are looking to get into management within the first few years of graduating. But its not worth it unless you have a clear career focus IMO. If you don't get into management or something business related soon after school it will be a waste. You should really consider career routes before dropping the extra time and money for the degree. Industry, marketing? sure mba may be your ticket. DOP or hospital management? Why not go for a masters in health care admin instead? The curriculum will be much more relavent and you will network with people that may actually help your career. Keep in mind also that some of the greatest value you will get from a management degree are the connections you will make. In general, I think management degrees are best for those who have worked several years and are ready to move up. That's why the top MBA/ Health Admin programs prefer people who are already in a career path and know what they want to get out of the degree.

Matters just as much in Law.. and I wouldn't be surprised if soon it will matter in pharmacy..

I was offered a Distric Manager position recently right out of school because of my MBA and communcation skills.

I declined but it does help if you want management as long as it comes from a real school with a decent name.

Just remember that when you get an extra degree, the expectations others have for you increases ..they expect you to perform better. Just think if you screw something up, the response may be "wow, you have an MBA and you still can't figure this out? What did they teach you, etc.?".......it's like the Harvard syndrome..no matter what you do and where you go in life, screw anything up and you will hear "...And you went to harvard!?!?!" (people expect more!)

It's not just about the letters after your name but how you use that knowledge & experience.

I agree with this statement. You can tell a HUGE difference from someone who graduated from UPENN vs. University of Phoenix.

If that's your attitude why do anything? You should have stopped school when they took away your Lego's just so for the rest of your life if you ever did anything wrong you could say "duhh it ok I never finish little kid school"

Because people treat extra letters after their name with a sense of entitlement. The point is that you need to use what you've learned.

It's not a case of memorizing material, giving presentations, taking exams, forgetting it all, getting the MBA and then saying "hooray, pay me," even though you really aren't more qualified than the guy without the MBA.
