  1. Pre-Dental
I am a pre-dent student from Canada (3.5/3.4, cGPA/sGPA), DAT (20:21:19, AA,TS,PAT) and I have applied to dental school in America. I have 4 interviews but I obviously need some back-up options. I have done some extensive research on pre-med/dental masters programs and SMPs. I will be applying to a couple of these but then I started thinking about doing an MBA program. This is obviously on the complete opposite end of health-sciences stream but from my past shadowing experiences, it seems apparent that one of the hardest things about being a dentist (especially if you are starting your own practice from ground up) is the business/finance/management side of dentistry. This is why I am considering doing an MBA program. Could this be useful? Would dental schools prefer I do a science related masters as opposed to doing an MBA?

Thank-you!

An MBA can be useful in practice, in general, in combination with real-world work experience. If you're actually interested in the business of running a practice on the profit-driven side of the US-Canada border, then an MBA is an appropriate first step towards being able to run a profitable practice. An MBA by itself doesn't qualify you to do jack, and many schools offer MBA programs that are nearly worthless despite being expensive.

It's my understanding that your GPA & DAT scores are below the averages for US dental school matriculants. If that's not the case, ignore the following: An MBA does not contribute to your ability to succeed in dental school, so it is not going to give you an edge over other applicants who have better stats. An MBA will not make you interesting if your stats make you uninteresting.

Best of luck to you.

It will not help you get into dental school. Its an interesting EC at best.

Plus, you can always do an MBA while in dental school - several places offer combined programs

Thank-you very much for your input!
