I know its early but do any of the non-traditional students on here plan on taking the March 2010 MCAT? If you are I would love to keep in contact with you so that we can see how our progress is going and possibly exchange advice througout studying and application journey.

i am also taking the mcat in march 2010. it would be great to compare my progress with someone else to keep myself motivated and on schedule. b/c i don't seem to be taking my schedule seriously as i know that i have plenty of time before the big day.

do you guys want to start of by materials you're using to study from?

I am going to use SN2ed's schedule http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=623898 and I have all of the EK stuff, Nova Physics and some older Kaplan stuff which I doubt I'll use. I want to get BR books, but it depends on how much money I have.

I would recommend starting with an hour or two a day in December/January if you're planning on taking in April. Starting now is just too soon, you don't want to burn out by April and/or forget the stuff you initially covered.

You think so?? I wanted to start early because I want to focus on physics a little more than the other subjects seeing as my first exam was kinda middle of the road. I just want to make sure that I cover everything thoroughly.

4 months is about as long as you want to go. anymore than that and you forget/burnout. I've read a lot about people like me who suck at physics and a lot of them said that BR really helped them.

If you're taking physics right now then your best bet is to spend a little extra time on the class to make sure you understand the material. If you're not mathematically minded, like me, then this sucks, but it will be well worth your while.

Focus on the class, get a good grade, then worry about studying for the MCAT.

Order the used books at Amazon.com. The MCAT has not changed that much in the last couple of years. I just bought 13 MCAT prep books - including the entire EK series, Kaplan subject-specific books and the Princeton overview book for under $80

I would absolutely recommend BR. I thought they were great. I was just saying that you should maximize what you're doing in class now so that it will be easier to cover the material when you do go through the BR books before your exam.

I'm taking May MCAT, add me to the list. Have already started dabbling with Verbal Reasoning and, also, making sure I read some nice material every day, like JAMA or Archeology, New Republic, Scientific American. Some of these have passages that are eerily reminiscent of MCAT verbal practice sections. 😀 Start now and you'll be cruising come Spring!!!

I am planning on taking MCAT in May. Have been searching online for good books. Has anyone used the Kaplan MCAT premier program? Any other suggestions would be great!

I have done quite a bit of research and so far the Berkeley Review, Princeton Review Hyperlearning series, and ExamKrackers (some books are better than others) seem to be really highly recommended. Kaplan is not bad, but I'm not sure about the premier program. The link I posted up above is to a pretty good study guide and the people that have used it with the materials have been pretty successful.

It seems this cohort of nontrad premeds is privy to some keen MCAT prep info.

I want to second some of the commentors on:

1. BR books. I used these to breakdown the logic of the chemistry and physics section. I am only medium smart. Maybe slow smart. But with a concentrated effort was able to use this material to score in the upper 90th percentile. I am saying that to be useful not boastful. I studied on my own so the material had to be really strong.

2. Reading the scientific journals that the other poster indicated. I did OK but not great on bio and I think my problem was fluency in science geek. I had a pretty firm background in biology. In all the MCAT-applicable courses. Biochem, physiology, Anatomy, cell biology, genetics, and molecular biology. But still could not penetrate, easily enough, the strange tongue of the science nerd. The MCAT bio is only marginally interested in your background. Mainly the want to play 3 card monty while rhyming ridiculous and spitting nerd lingo upside your head. with graphs. pictorials. Charts and things.

3. Not burning out. This is the last premed exam of consequence. It must be approached in a way that you climax energetically at the right time. You have to gauge your available study time carefully with your own grip on how you learn best. I spent a lot of time prepping my PS background b/c my physics and chem were really rusty. You'll have to do your own self diagnosis that gears you up to address your own weaknesses.

To ameliorate the whole process I also recommend a rigorous exercise program to accompany your study regimen. Emphatically.

Time is really flying by! I am planning on taking it in April (not sure about the date yet...)
