Hey guys, I have a 3.7 GPA and 27 MCAT. I have over four years experience in hospitals with an enormous amount of patient contact and about three in research. Beyond that, I have great letters of rec., including three from faculty at OHSU. My dilema is if I should take the MCAT in august and delay my app. or get a jump start and apply now. Last year, I was interviewed and placed in the hold pool at OHSU, after taking the august MCAT and delaying my app. so I am trying to figure out if it makes more sense to apply early this time and hopefully get in. ANy suggestions or advice is highly appreciated. Thanks and good luck to everyone applying again.

Is OSU (assuming that's your #1 choice) a school that uses a true rolling admissions process, or do they hold off until interviews are nearly over before admitting? That information is pretty important for this decision. Your MCAT score is probably good enough to get you in, but I would play up your extensive clinical experience and apply to a wide range of schools.

Alot depends on what kind of score you think you would get retaking the MCAT...if it's going to be a 36, then by all means delay and take the test...but if it's only going to increase by a point or two, I would be inclined to get the application process started early, making sure to apply to a variety of schools.

I would send in you app...and let them know that you are also retaking the MCAT. Your grades and experiences seem solid.....so get that app in as soon as possible

Did you apply anyplace else? There is nothing wrong with a 27 MCAT when the rest of your app is solid, so I bet you missed out because of being so late. I'd get your app in right away, and like the others said, apply to a range of schools.

I think the 27 is good...with all that medical experience it shouldn't hold you back 🙂

A 27 is good as others have said, but don't let that give you false hope. If you can improve, I'd say submit your app now and retake the exam in Aug exam. Also, is OHSU your top choice? I believe they said they will discuss your application with you if you request it (after this cycle is over of course). Find out firsthand if your mcat score is what's holding you back.

I know a whole bunch of people who have gotten into various schools with a 27. Are you only wanting that one school or do you intend to apply to a number of schools? If you do, then you should have a very good chance of getting in somewhere.

27 is great.. people are always saying things like "oh you have to break 30 to even be considered" but ad coms look @ a variety of factors
your gpa is solid- that shows youre smart & work hard, its better to have a high gpa and lower mcat than a low gpa and high mcat
your experiences will def be a plus and strengthen your ap- dont worry!
are you an ohio resident?
