:( Mcat blues..

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I recently received my score 8/8/8 .. 24. Not too happy about it. My EC's are really good and they are each diverse from one another
-clinical research at a top hospital
-starting lab research soon
-over 500 hours of volunteering including in an osteopathic hospital
-president of a health foundation
-some other random leadership positions and shadowing an MD and DO
Wonderful LORs as well
worked throughout most of college
tutored children with learning disorders as well

Will the balanced scores make my chances better? :/ I'm really bummed. My gpa is around 3.4 with a sciences around 3.45. California resident and I'm restricted to only West coast schools due to family. I've already sent in apps and wondering if I should just ride out the season while studying for a retake in january. My app is VERY well written and my secondaries will be as well. HELP 🙁

Nothing you can do at this point. Since you've already paid everything you might as well ride it out. 3.4/3.45/24 isn't terrible and I won't be surprised if you get in somewhere. Try to apply more broadly despite your family reasons, but if you must stay west, then you must.

Don't be too bummed about it. You'll be fine.

You've got 7 schools grazing the coast to pick from... eight if you go out as far as RVU. Not bad.

apply broadly! apply to the new schools, schools with lower stats. If I were you, I would apply to east coast schools too. I am a CA resident too with a lower GPA but a 32 MCAT and I have yet to receive any love from any of the west coast school except from AZCOM. I would also recommend you to retake to be on the safe side in case you need to reapply.

best of luck!

Yea. No offense, but I kind of almost facepalmed when I read that you were still considering west coast only.

yea i was kinda taken back when you said youd only consider applying non west coast schools like DMU and CCOM...top DO schools..you gotta keep an open mind. East coast schools will ultimately get you in the same place.

Might sound crazy, but can you retake for 9/11?

My parents are pretty strict and they I am lucky enough that they are paying for this whole process for me so I can't just book a flight to virginia or something for an interview lol.. also since AZCOM wants 27+mcat apparently and NV wants 25+ and I'm not into AT Stills BC I don't like their program, I'm stuck with just western and Touro CA 🙁 I hope they give me a chance

Also ColeSmalls the only reason I can apply to CCOM w/o my parents complaining is BC my mom's friend has a son who goes there. But I probably shouldn't even waste $ applying there with my stats 🙁

Parents should not be dictating your future, these are your choices. You still should still apply out east and if you don't get accepted to your top schools, get an interview elsewhere and sell your xbox/ps3/laptop to buy tickets there. If school choice is vital to you, see how you do this year and retake for next cycle.

Good Luck

I am only 20 waiting one year wouldn't kill me, but I am very inpatient lol and want to just get into it now while i'm on a roll

Psh, if you're not into medical school by the age of 22, you might as well quit.

I'm 24, fyi.

You're at the bottom end of competetive with that MCAT, but I think you'll do OK. I assume you're applying to COMP and TUCOM-CA?

Have you tried sitting down with your parents and discussing with them why you should apply to east coast school? Show them the statistics on GPA/MCAT for each school and hopefully they can understand from that point on. Not to discourage you, but Western is one of the most competitive DO school. I would put my energy into convincing my parents at this point. Also, I read somewhere on SDN that people who can't afford $ get credit cards to pay for the app. cycle and then pay it back later with the living expenses money that come with the loans med.students take.

Good luck! I hope this cycle brings you some love from the west coast schools. :xf::xf:

You're not familiar with how some parents can be. Though I typically agree with your sentiment, not everyone has an option.

Personally my parents kicked me out of their house (I was 21) when I refused to give up on medicine. Unlikely to happen to most people, but I certainly understand when people say they don't have parental support.

I remember you from the 7/6 mcat thread. Honestly since you've already applied riding it out is the only option, but from what I see in the book for DO schools-if you restrict to west coast only your GPA mcat combo is likely not competitive. If you applied to DO schools with low stats, they are still a reach imho. There is a spreadsheet somewhere around here that you put your stats in and it tells you where It's worth applying. I'll try to find it for you. I understand the deal with your parents as well. It may be easier to wait a year than have a huge falling out-it's a personal preference. My personal preference would be to stand up for myself and stop taking their money, but the alternative is respectable as well

SOMA wants a 26+ these days too, and your GPA's are low for there too. Their MCAT average for my class was higher than KCOM.

OP, I don't think you're in a position to be choosy. Tell your parents that if they want you to have a shot this year you're going to have to apply pretty much everywhere. It's too bad Pikeville has such a strong Appalachian preference because that's about the only school I can see you being statistically competitive at with a low/low average GPA and a low MCAT.

Best of luck.

It seems like most of your worries are Naive. A word of advice, if you do receive interviews - don't let it show.

And on another note, keep a positive attitude. Negativity is not going to get you anywhere and is a turn off to people.
