If you got that really hard passage during the MCAT, you may be in luck.

The following came from the AAMC Website:

How does the MCAT get test questions?

A large pool of content experts writes the items. New items are included in each administration of the MCAT as "field test" questions. Field test questions are not scored, but they are assessed for their performance and, if they are approved, are used on a future MCAT.

I think I might have just realized that the supposed field test questions on this specific passage on my physical section might have held me back. This could have led me to miss all of these AND the the last passge (easy questions) that I ran out of time to do and had to furiously bubble away. I really should have done the last one first and go back to the fishy one.

I wish they told us which were the field test questions... because then I know to stop frontin over certain questions that I thought were tough or new during the test. Whats worse is that they don't even count for points... there just there to see how many people get them right, and how many get them wrong.

yeah probably not...easy questions dont need testing because they are...easy. everyone would get em right.

The MCAT Essentials packet is really good. It talks about the field questions and that they're not scored.

Field questions could be very easy or very hard or even right in the middle. That's why they are field tested! Each question on your exam that actually counts was once a field question in prior years. So you could have a question on your exam that was a field test for your cousin 2-3 years ago!

If they notice that a lot of students are getting the field question right, they might not include it. Same for questions that a lot of students don't get right. There's a scale/curve they use. If they told you what questions were field questions you would skip them and not take them seriously. So they'll never tell you, hoping you take it seriously.
