Hey Guys,

I totally need an advice on whether or not I should take the August 2004 MCAT or wait until the April 2005 MCAT. I just recently took my diagnostic and I got a 20 and I'm very discouraged. I want to do well and get a 35. I know that I can push my self for the August test but I know I'll probably end up with a 30. What do you guys think I should do? Please help!

I'm assuming you are a sophomore. But even if you are not, you have two months to study. It is a great opportunity. Most people get low 20s on the first diagnostic. My friend got a 22 and got a 37 on the real test. And if you don't get a 35, and get a 30 instead, you WILL get into medical school! But even if you don't you have two opportunities instead of one. It is unadvisable to take the August test in the junior year.

Why do you need a 35?

My initial test without studying I got a 21 and I got a 36 on the real thing. See how you are doing on practice tests the week before the mcat and make your decision then.

What kind of diagnostic was this? If it's the Kaplan one, I wouldn't worry about it because it's fairly hard to score well on it without having looked at the material beforehand. Why don't you just go all out for August and see how you're doing the week before and decide then? It's pretty hard to predict how you'll wind up doing because there are so many factors involved like how well you take standardized tests and how dedicated you are to studying.

I disagree. It is fine to take the MCAT at any time during your junior year, as long as you have completed the prequisites and are prepared for the exam. It is only inadvisable to take the August MCAT during your senior year due to the delayed application processing created.

I think Kaplan's diagnostic test borders on being unethical. I took the free 1/2 length practice test and got a terrible score. It scared the hell out of me but looking back I realize that the actual test is so much easier than that dam "diagnostic."

It exists to scare people into shoving money down the hole of a review course.

The diagnostic test really means nothing. If it's the Kaplan test, you obviously took it without studying for it because they told you to do so. I got a 27 on my diagnostic and my real score ended up being a 42. You'll be fine.

I agree with the previous posters: don't worry about the diagnostic score at all (I would even venture to say to not evey worry if it's not the kaplan diagnostic either). By the time you take the real test, you'll have taken so many practice tests and reviewed the material so well that it will be nothing like the diagnostic at all. You just have different tools when you take the real test after preparing adequately.

Personally, I got a 22 on my diag and got 30+ on the real thing. Fear not, and just buckle down and study.
