I just have some questions about MCAT Prep.
(I already have audio osmosis and EK review books)

Did you take a review course?
If so, which one and did it help you to do well on the MCAT?

I am looking for a good practice workbook, any suggestions, please let me know.

Also, please add any recommendations in preparing for this BEAST.

Thanks!

Lots of people I've talked to seem to think Kaplan is good, but only for the practice tests. You can study the books on your own, instead of wasting time in class.

Hey! I agree! I took the Kaplan classroom course - the practice tests were good, however the classroom time was a waste. They give you the same class books that you get in the 1 volume in the book store and go over it almost word for word. The book was a really great resource though - it's easy to understand, covers all the necessary info, and is straight to the point.

So then would you say that the best method of preparation for the MCAT is on your own, without any review course at all?

I actually have the opportunity to take a review course but it's not through kaplan or TRP. It will be taught by a bio prof at my school for less $$. I am considering taking this course, however, if truly the best method of prep is on your own, I may opt to do that.

Thoughts or opinions, anyone?

I took TRP and found the class time valuable. While I agree that I could have learned more if I had studied on my own, the structure of having class every day, and having the subject matter offered to me in a structured way was positive. If you really think that you are motivated enough to study several hours a day from now until April, then the course would probably not help much.

If you do decide to take a course, just make sure that you plenty of time to study outside of the course, as well. Just passively sitting through the classes will be unproductive and insufficient.

In my case, I would take TPR again. I was mostly pleased.

Hi MG:

If you look in the MCAT thread, you will find more information about how people are preparing.

I prepared by taking the Princeton Review. I love their books. In addition, I bought Kaplan books as well and their practice exams but I did not find the Kaplan exams very challenging.

For verbal, I read my LSATs Book, ExamCrackers, and especially the princeton review verbal book. I also bought all the exams from AMCAS as well.

I prepared using Gold Standard and the AAMC exams (which I highly recommend). I also borrowed books from the library such as Flowers and Silver, just as a supplement. When deciding about a review course, think about if you just need to refresh your memory of previously learned material, or if you would benefit from more instruction.

Kaplan books and class. Class time was ridiculous and I never went. Took all of the review tests.
