MCAT Re-write: 3rd time?
Okay, so here is my story:

I have just finished my undergrad (life science) at UofT (Canada) and starting a MSc. in the Fall at UofT. I have written the MCAT twice already (the past 2 summers) and have done poorly (19S and 21R). Both summers I took the TRP course, did all the questions, did all the practice AAMCS/TPR test (twice). I was averaging 9-10s in the sections, but PS was most challenging for me.

My GPA for the past two years has been 3.85, which I believe makes me eligible for various schools. I have over 3 years research experience, and plenty of volunteer/ECs. I am starting my Masters in September (2 years) and hope to reapply to med after, but until then I have to re-write the MCAT. I decided to take this summer "off" and just work and not do MCAT, and I'm thinking to do it during the year or next summer.

I feel that the MCAT is the last stumbling block, preventing me from applying. I feel really lost in how to tackle the test for the 3rd time, and I am worried to fail again. All of my friends seem to be succesful in doing well, so I don't know what's wrong with me. I need a new strategy/advice, and wondering if anyone has any advice/suggestions!

Thanks!!

Take time off.

You have 2 years to study and take the beast. Might as well relax and destress.

Perhaps taking TPR is not a good choice for you again since it didnt seem to help you the first 2 times. I would recommend Kaplan which is what I did.

I agree to take your time and prepare for your 3rd re-write. If you are applying to Canadian schools, multiple re-writes will not effect you. Almost all schools look either at the best score or the most recent.

Before you start studying again, you MUST find out exactly what went wrong the past two times. Analyzing everything. From study strategies, to old tests, to stress levels, EVERYTHING. Secondly, retaking old tests is pointless (especially if you take the tests for a third time) and will artificially raise your score. Hence, you need to get new practice material. I suggest the typical combo:

BR for Physics, O-chem, and Gen-chem
EK for Verbal (EK 101) and Bio (content review + EK 1001)

For practice tests, pick up either GS or BR.

Lastly, studying for long periods of time (6 or more months) isn't helpful. You need to concentrate your studying time to around 3-4 months, 5 at the most.

Take the time to figure out what went wrong and tackle it head-on. You CAN do it... best of luck from a successful third-timer with two low starting scores!

Do you mind sharing how you changed ur strategy for the third time? how did you change your studying, etc?

Thanks 🙂
