Hi everyone,

If anyone could help me it would be wonderful, so here goes:

I am taking Orgo 1 & Physic 1 next semester (Spring 2010) then Fall 2010 will be taking Phy 2 and Orgo 2. I was planning on taking the MCAT's Jan 2011 or as early as I can in 2011 .... and applying to med school for Fall 2011...

Am I on the right track? or is there something wrong in the way I am planning on doing this?

Hey there,

That's not too bad of an idea, as long as you know you're o chem and phyics pretty well. The second semester material will still show up on the mcat, so keep that in mind. If you think you can make time, I would recommend waiting as long as you can in the semester so that you can be taught as much material as possible before taking it, because you definitely don't want to have to take the test again. Do you plan to apply right away in June when you can?

I'm not sure if you mean applying to START in 2011 or applying IN 2011. They are not the same. I am assuming you've already taken Chem and Bio 101 and 102, right? If you take the MCAT in early 2011 you'd be applying later that year to start in 2012.

Good point, adriana 86 did you mean you want to start in 2012? Because any mcat taken january and beyond wont count for the next cycle in most schools (So an mcat taken now for example wouldn't work for the current cycle of admissions)

I meant i want to take the MCAT's in the start of 2011 (January to April) and in the same year apply to med school (to start in the Fall of 2011) ... These are my last science classes left and I have taken Bio and Chem...

I am confused as to why I need to wait to apply to start in 2012?

That is not what my advisor told me! he is known for being discouraging and unreliable.

Thank you so much - I did not know this...

Yeah no problem! And just fyi here is the mcat schedule for 2010:

http://www.aamc.org/students/mcat/reserving/mcatschedule.htm

All of those dates will work for the 2010-2011 application cycle.

I wouldn't really recommend taking the mcat without taking those classes unless you are really good at teaching yourself and extremely diligent haha. But hey anything is worth a shot if you want it bad enough!

I'm pretty sure this is basically the timeline of your application year.

The AMCAS becomes available June 1st. During the summer and possibly into the fall schools will send you their secondary applications if they're interested in you. Interviews are usually during the fall and into the very beginning of the next year (some schools will interview into the spring but you should have most of your decisions by then unless you get WLed) and I THINK you have to make you admission decision by May 15th (meaning, if you get accepted to more than one school, you have to drop all but one acceptance by that date). So you apply the year before you would matricuate.

I got that right, right guys?

Yeah that's right! You hit it on the head. So this year for example we could start applying June 2nd, 2009, and it ended at different dates depending on the schools (probably somewhere between October 2009 and January 2010 generally). And whoever gets accepted will start in the fall of 2010. Since this thread is based upon when to take the mcat, it is probably helpful to say that schools will usually accept an mcat taken no later than september of the application year (so september of 2009 for this years cycle). I hope that makes sense!

Taking the MCAT in January of 2011 will prepare you to apply in June of 2011. If accepted in the 2011 cycle, you will start school in FALL OF 2012. Just wanted to make sure that was apparent

If you wish to start medical school in the Fall of 2011, you must apply in the 2010 cycle this June.

As I was reading this thread, I am surprised it took so many responses to clear this up.

Yes, you should be applying one year before you actually want to start med school. Applying in summer/fall 2011 means you will gain admission to start in fall 2012.

I'm pretty sure I said that in the second response, in so many words.
