For those who have gotten into DO programs, what kinds of scores did you get on the MCAT. I'm just curious to see the range.

a friend of mine got in to north texas with a 24, but then she was weigh-listed at an md school and got in!

Hi,

For a lot of folks, its 24~26 with a GPA of around 3.30

Some schools are really EC heavy.

🙂

I had those stats...and had good ECs...and applied early...and only got into 1 school out of 8 DO schools i applied to...so i think the stats are higher now

Just to set things straight your stats dont get you in they get you an interview. If your bomb ur interview doesnt matter what u have, you wont get in

URM = under represented minority

I don't think I've said it in any of these threads, but good luck to all. To quote a great movie I once saw "In the end, the universe tends to unfold as it should."

I had a 24 MCAT but a 3.72 GPA and tons of ECs and was accepted to Touro MI and PCOM. You really just need to do your best at everything, b/c while my MCAT was low, I put a TON of effort into my personal statement and did a lot of mock interviews. Good luck!

I didn't get accepted to UNT-TCOM with a 28, so it is highly variable.

This is why medical school admissions is a "crapshoot."

I got a 22 (eeek!), however, my GPA was 3.76 (combined--I have 2 degrees) finished my 2cnd degree with a 4.0 which included all med school prereqs. I think my GPA helped them to somewhat overlook my crappy MCAT score.

This is a good attitude to approach the admissions process. Once you get an interview you have to remember why you got it and then represent when you interview.

MCAT 30P
GPA 3.4

Attending Touro University Mare Island.

Best of luck to you!

Why such high GPAs compared to MCAT scores?

Your best bet is always to apply early... I had the ACCOMAS done for June 1st, and secondaries out as they came in...last year.

I had a 25 MCAT and 3.45GPA I was invited for interview for 7 out of 8 schools and accepted to the 4 interviews I went too. (Western, NOVA, UMD-SOM, and PCOM) I will be joining PCOM in the fall. The only school that did not offer invite was PCOM-GA because I had already accepted PCOM-PA.

Apply early!!!

that's my theory. in contrast, a friend got in with a 24 and 3.9, was weight-listed at a state med. school.. and now is attending a state med. school!

Lets just face the facts here. If you have a stellar GPA and a crappy MCAT you'll get in as long as your interveiw goes well. If you Have a Stellar MCAT and a crappy GPA (within reason, greater than 3.0) you'll get in. If you have a great GPA and a great MCAT and you are a total troll in the interview ------- well, you should not get in anywhere. It also helps alot to have good LORs and a bit of "credible" clinical experience.

I think it boils down to the fact that DO schools look at their applicants holistically true to their philosophy. As you pointed out, even if an applicant is weak in one section but excellent in others, they'll give you a chance. What bugs me is that some key in onto the applicants 1 weakness and say that look school <fill in any of our schools> gave admission to a guy who had <fill in any # thought to be below par>. Well did you see what other things the applicant offered? Guess what the answer is...

hi guys
my MCAT is a 31 but my GPA is about a 3.1 (with retakes included).
i am graduating in 2007 but am not applying to med schools until after i graduate. my plan is to retake the mcat because i doubt my gpa will rise that much more in one year.
i have 100 hrs of volunteer service in various depts at the U of M hospital, 150 hrs with the red cross, i have been an RA for two years, i have tutored middle school kids for one, and i have volunteered in a domestic abuse shelter for one as well. i am still trying to get a prof to allow me to do research with them in my final year.
what do you guys think i should do? stay for a fifth year in undergrad and get another science degree (bc i only need about 6 more classes to do that) and try to raise my GPA or do a masters or post-bac...or...?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!
good luck to all

If you dont mind going DO school, taking a 5th year may not be necessary..And if you want to take another year and go for DO schools then i would concentrate and retake even more classes..this is the fastest way to raise your gpa...And..in my opinion..your MCAT is fine...you do not need to retake that..Unless you are absolutely certain you can raise it another couple of points...If i were you..i would apply during 4th year..and see where i get accepted to...Then decide on whether you want to take an extra year or not..

Mcat - 29
Gpa - 3.8

I'd think seriously about a masters to pull up your GPA. And with a 31, I would not take the MCAT again, since there's a decent chance that your score will actually go down -- and then where would you be? Masters is the way to go. Good luck! 👍

i'm the other way around (there were some miscalcs of my aacomas gpas which i corrected with a letter at interviews) but here's the initial values on aacomas that schools saw when they offered me interviews. i got 2/3 do interviews plus 1 md interview.

mcat 33P
aacomas overall gpa 2.72 (sci 2.78) - long story but from a higher tier college
grad (in a sci) overall gpa 3.66 (sci 3.69)
postbacc 4.0

UMDNJ-SOM 2010

Well, think about it, different applicants have different situations: full-time work + full-time school leaves little time compared to other applicants with less time restraints, some are raising families on top of that, culture, background, anxiety, the list goes on and on. Some people don't have the luxury of taking a prep course. It would be more convenient to retake a one day test if need be, than to retake a but load of courses. It seems that retaking the MCAT and doing better is more appealing than retaking courses. What would you chose if you had to put one or the other on the back burner out of necessity?

Chances are it has nothing to do with a person's potential or ability given stellar GPA and low MCAT rather, circumstances. And I guess I don't understand why people find it suprising that some could have great GPAs but low MCATs.
