im taking the mcat this saturday...on the practice exams, i have been scoring 19-21....i plan on goin to NYCOM if all works out well....my question is, being that i have been scoring poor, should i take it this sat (i feel good going into the test though). Whats the min score that NYCOM will even consider?
thanks

I have not taken the test yet myself, but from everything that I hear a 21 will not cut the mustard. However everything has to be taken into account so:

1. Are you a NY state resident? (from what I understand they give preference to NY residents)

2. How is your GPA? (both cumulative and science)

3. What does your E.C.'s look like?

4. What about your personal story? (this won't matter at all though if your MCAT score does not grant you an interview)

5. Have you really put your strongest effort into studying for the MCAT? If not I recomend studying your A$$ off for the August test. If you did and you do not get accepted have you considered becoming a P.A.? P.A. is not a bad job at all if you really want to be in the health care profession and do not mind not being the boss.

I cannot speak on the specifics of NYCOM, but I would say that it cannot hurt you too bad to go ahead and sit for the MCAT on Saturday. I would try to find out whether or not NYCOM primarily takes the most recent score (in case you have to retake the test) or looks at all of them. I personally would say go ahead and take the test. You've paid for it, and it sounds like you have already done some prep work. Who knows? You may suprise yourself. I was not scoring very well on the practice tests, but I definitely made a decent showing on the MCAT. Not great by any means, but not embarrassing either. And as long as you want to go osteopathic... Good luck on whatever you decide!

goin in and sit for the test since u paid for it, but void ur scores before turning it in if u think u bombed it...cuz it's better to put your best foot forward, even if it means sitting out a year.

Yes, take it so schools will start looking at your applications. You might have good luck anyway. The schools will take the best of the 2 scores, so you can always retake it in August.

thanks for the posts people....my attitude is that im gonna kick this mcats a$$ no matter how i've been scoring. i guess i will see what happens....thanks again for the info!

That's the motivation you should have. You will do fine.
Good Luck.

I wouldn't take it. If you took AMCAS practice tests in a realistic setting and nothing has changed since then, you'll probably get very close to a 21 on the real thing. No need having that on your record.

Don't take and then decide to void. Most people aren't good judges of how they did by "feel", but only by predictive tests, which you've done.

you know you get to add scores from all 3 sections, even verbal.

i'm jus playin. attitude and confidence are very important going in. good luck. hope everything works out for you.

from reading posts, i can see u always get alteast 1 wise a$$ to chime in.... 👍 way to be public....but hey thanks for the support everyone including you public

It really depends on which practice tests you are referring to as Moose typed. Some of the Kaplan/PR/EK tests are meant to be harder and aren’t real indicators of how you will do. The only tests that I, in my opinion, felt were comparable and indicative of the real thing are the AMCAS official practice tests that are in fact old tests. If, at this point, you are scoring that low on those tests you should postpone until August and re-evaluate your study method. Good luck
