Hey guys,
When schools say they accept MCAT "within 3 years old," is it 3 years from the application cycle, or 3 years from matriculation?

I took MCAT in 2014. Can I apply in 2017 for Fall 2018 entrance?

I think it's 3 years from the time of application, but I'm not 100% sure on that. You're saying you want to apply 2 cycles from now? What is keeping you from applying this cycle or next if you've already taken the MCAT? Risking your MCAT scores expiring is not something I'd toe the line with.

I think it's usually three years from matriculation so your 2014 MCAT would be too late.

I took my MCAT in 2011 (only one time) and applied for the 2014-2015 cycle. I was lucky that my school accepted a 3 year old score, but with the new MCAT, I believe the oldest MCAT they accept now is from 2013 for the 2015-16 cycle(only 2 years). Although there is a " 3 year limit," each school (as I found out the hard way) had varying requirements for the oldest MCAT taken. --The longer you wait the less options you have.

If you are planning to take time off, even though you are set with your scores, gpa, ECs, etc., the best suggestion I could give is that you should apply as soon as you can and request a deferral (if allowed by the school).

thanks for replying. Erm, is there any source that says this? because this file from AAMC says most schools will still accept the old MCAT till 2017-2018: https://www.aamc.org/students/download/398586/data/mcatexampolicy.pdf

Yup, MSAR (Medical School Admissions Requirements) https://www.aamc.org/students/applying/requirements/msar/

When you select the school after signing in, click on Application deadlines and Requirements on the left hand side. For example, Downstate is currently accepting oldest MCAT date of Sept 1, 2013.

@ridethecliche I didnt realize this until I actually applied and was caught off guard...

Sorry, I meant applying. I did not apply to Downstate because they would not have accepted my score test date. But if I did apply, they would wait until I took a more recent MCAT score before they reviewed my application. -- I just did not want to take it again.

This highlights one of the importance of checking on each individual schools requirement, another would be their pre-reqs.

Make sure to check MSAR before listing the schools on AMCAS, it will save you time and money.
