I have all the prereqs done except Org I and II, However, I may not be able to take Orgo I this fall and may have to complete it in the spring instead. Can I sit for the MCAT with just this??? I have all A's in my other prereqs (nontrad). Any help?? Thanks

If you're confident with your ability to work hard and learn new material... I think you'll be fine. I was definitely a pessimist until this past spring when one of my best friends did exactly what you're proposing and he killed the MCATs (of course he's one of the smartest guys I know...) but nevertheless its not impossible.

If you take a MCAT prep class... they're pretty good at teaching you what you need to know form Orgo... in fact its much better studying orgo from their books then from your school text books because sometimes there's just too much info you don't need to know in the school text books.

So bottom line is... if you're mentally ready for the MCATs... go for it.

Hope that helps a bit. Good luck

you can take the mcat whenever you feel you are ready man.. there is an orgo section and it wud be recommended to take orgo... but if u are doin the april mcat next year and orgo at the same time.. you might be able to do it..... (not recommended but u are crunched for time huh?) takin the mcats u can do anytime..applyin through amcas to schools you might wanna get those prereqs in ! Good luck man!

I actually recommend taking organic chemistry while studying for the April MCAT....this way, organic is fresh in your mind and you don't even have to study it for the MCAT! You'll go into much more depth in your organic chemistry class at school than is required for the MCAT.

But is it possible to do it with just having taken Orgo I?

Definitely possible (its been done before), but I would say its unreasonable.

Most of the reactions are going to come from 2nd-semester. There is much less emphasis on Sn2, Sn1, etc. reactions from Ochem 1, and more emphasis on the "carbonyl chemistry" and such in Ochem 2.

This might not sound fun, but study the reactions you need to know (consult any Kaplan, TPR, or EK book) over christmas break and then take a few practice tests to see where you stand.

Yes, it's possible, make sure you have carbonyl chemistry, particularly carboxylic acids and their derivatives down pat (you will have to study the second part by yourself since it's part of org II)

You should audit orgo II lectures. I know it will be at the same time as orgo I, but near the end of the semester, it should start to gel. Hopefully by April, eh?

I took the MCAT while I was in the MIDDLE of Orgo I (not II!). I got a 10 on BS...which was lower than my other scores, but I was happy. If only they had more testing date options! Anyway, I thought that most of what the MCAT covered was learned 1st semester (I had lots of spectroscopy questions, some Sn1/2, E1/E2, nomenclature, etc.). Of course, after you take Orgo II (I just finished) you'll think "that MCAT stuff is easy cheez!"

Anyway, if you need to take it in April or whatever and you won't have Orgo II then just go for it. Don't worry...study hard!

and i was worried about having orgo II in april =p. I thought i wouldnt cover everything by april, and still have time to do some practice questions, but if its possible with orgo I only im not too worried now 😀.

I did the exact same thing. In ochem II you'll see a pattern of the same reactions over and over (you'll see what I mean). So when you see something simlar on the MCAT you'll be gravy--just look for the fundamentals, the MCAT will try to dress it up and confuse u.

The only thing later in the semester that was tested, was a random independent question on the Wittig Reaction. Other than that, you will be ok knowing the core concepts in ochem II.

o-chem is getting less of an emphasis because of increased genetics questions....with a good review course you don't even have to take orgo I before the MCAT....you simply don't need orgo II for the MCAT

I didn't take org 1 or 2 before the MCAT and I rocked it. The org stuff is some of the easiest stuff on it. The MCAT questions are pretty simple org chem questions. I just bought a org Chem text book and did the questions at the end of the chapters.

Maybe it was just my MCAT test, but if I had to do it again I would study org less and general bio more.

Like Sage, I didn't have any orgo before taking the MCAT. I don't know if i rocked it or not, but I got a 10BS nonetheless. I basically used the EK as a model and consulted textbooks from there.

Good luck!!

I took the MCAT without ever having E+M Physics (Physics II for most schools) and I did fine. I think you're fine so long as you put in some time to review the stuff you haven't had in Orgo (or take a prep class)

I think you should be fine, most of the orgo on the mcat was orgo 1 as far as i recall...

There's really not too much organic on there in the first place, but there's even less O chem II than I. A friend of mine took it without having o chem II and he got a 10 in BS.... and he's an idiot. I'd say you'll be fine.

I did exactly this - I took the MCAT in April while enrolled in Orgo 1 for that semester. I did not notice a single question on the MCAT that could not be answered using what I already knew from Orgo 1 (and believe me, I was worried). I got a 13 BS. Yes, I got lucky that this year's MCAT didn't include any Orgo 2 material, but in general, I think you're fine without it. Even if the problems were equally distributed among the four semesters of biological science, that'd still only be 1/4 of the BS material that you wouldn't already know -- and the BS is only 1/3 of the MCAT. The advantage you get from taking it in April easily outweighs the worry about Orgo 2 in my book.
