ok so i took the mcat in september (not happy with the score and first time i took it as well) and now im planning on retaking it BUT there are no january spots open and the next test date after that is april. do you think schools will still accept scores from april (april 5th to be exact). i'm soo worried b/c i don't want to apply with my current scores. my entire application is complete i'm just debating what to do about the mcat. also, do any of the schools accept any other type of grad school admissions test besides the mcat?

look farther away for open slots in january... i think april is way too late for most do and md schools.

did you turn in your primaries and secondaries with the first mcat score? I do not think schools will accept april. I know some of the carribean schools don't accept the mcat, but I don't know if you want to do that.

All US med schools (MD and DO) require the MCAT, no exceptions.

April is waaay too late to retake the MCAT if you're applying this cycle, unless you're trying to update your file and increase your chances of being pulled off the waitlist.

Good Luck :luck:

What did you get on the MCAT, and what does the rest of your application look like? If you're like most pre-meds, you're probably overreacting, and it might be worth a shot.

And if you really did do poorly, it still might be worth a shot. And if you don't get in, waiting another year is not the end of the world.

Your MCAT score will always be a matter of record. All medical schools will know how you scored on your first MCAT exam. DO NOT rush into another test...study harder.

As for the last question you asked...talk to your academic advisor.

Do what Tex suggested. Apply this time and see what happens. Without knowing what you made we cant really say yes/no/maybe/not a snowballs chance in hell. And whats the worst that happens? You dont get in this year, but study hard for the next test and rock it? Which means you have to wait a year, but you will have a much better MCAT and hopefully some more experiences to help boost your application. And waiting an extra year isnt the end of the world, I promise. Many of us here have done it and though it sucked, it was nice to have some time off to do whatever you wanted.

ok, so I was recently waitlisted at my top choice school. When I took the MCAT, I hadn't taken Physics I & II or Organic Chem II because of playing field hockey in college and spending a semester in Ireland. Anyway, I know I'd do a lot better now, having taken those courses.

My question is: if I sign up for the January 26 MCAT, and improve my score, do you think it will help my chances of getting an acceptance?

To the OP:

Did you submit your primary apps yet? If not, you are way way too late for MD & DO programs. Regarding MCAT scores, you have to check with individual schools to see what scores they will accept. Most schools will not accept January scores for the same year. There is a list somewhere on the web...
If you have not yet submitted your primaries, don't even bother this year. Instead, take the April MCAT to bring up your numbers and get your applications in as early as possible for the 2009 application cycle.

I think it really depends on what your MCAT score is and if there are other areas of your app that need improving.

I just gave up my spot for the January 26th MCAT in Brooklyn, NY. Don't know where you are. But there you go. I didn't feel prepaired, and am not willing to risk it. I'm also older than most of trad folks applying (37.5 y.o 😱). So last thing I need is a "low blow" from MCAT :meanie:.

Good Luck finding a spot....and if you really feel prepared it may be worth a drive or even a flight where the spots are open :luck:

I also gave up a spot on January 25 in Fort Worth, TX (technically Bedford) for the same reasons as NewHope. So in case someone is willing to travel you could check and see if that spot is still open.

Laconic expression. But you are beautiful!!
ok, so I have to come clean. My original name on SDN was mkendall, but I wanted to be a bit more anonymous (Kendall is part of my real name), so I changed it to meggielou, and then blew it by accidentally signing into my old username (I can't figure out how to delete that account). Anyway, when I realized I had posted my MCAT scores as mkendall, I freaked out and deleted it, leaving the "." instead.

Now that my TRUE identity has been revealed (and will go no further than this thread I'm sure ) maybe I could get some advice? Also, I'd like to thank EEL for her earlier advice. Anyway, my original MCAT scores were: 11VR, 8 BS, R in writing, and (gulp) 6PS. I'm pretty sure I can raise the BS by a bit now that I've taken Orgo II and three more upper level bios. Also, I think now that I've actually taken a physics class, my PS will go up a lot.

So my long-winded question is, considering I have a decent (though not stellar) GPA, will retaking the MCAT help my chances of getting off the waitlist and accepted at my top choice (I already have one acceptance)?

 I was wondering if that's what was going on. You replied from your other account to me and I was like, huh? Okay so you've been accepted at one school but you're really hoping for another school right? What is the average MCAT of your top choice school? Have you sent a letter of intent?

Oh and I got a 6 on PS but I already had Physics I and II so I think that's a pretty good score for you. 😉

meggielou, did obed mention how the waitlist slots are at Touro Harlem? At Touro -MI and NEvada, basically, high waitlist means you'll eventually get in. But seeing as NYC is such a favorable place to live, not sure if Harlem offers the same deal

haha yeah, I wanted to be more anonymous, but can't figure out how to delete my other account, and sometimes my computer signs me in with the old name 🙁. Anyway, I don't know what the ave. is for my top choice (Touro-NY) because it's a new school, but the interview cut-off is 24 and I got a 25, sooo I'm thinking that's not so great. And yes, I was accepted at another school. I'm planning to send my letter of intent tomorrow (I wanted to make sure it was perfect!).

yeah, Obed said there was a good chance of getting in, but I hate to gamble! Also, the letter that I got said that if a spot didn't open for 2008, I will "be considered as a candidate for Early Acceptance to the Class of 2013 should you ultimately not be offered acceptance to the Class of 2012."

What do we think of that statement. And also, should I sign up for the Jan. MCAT?

So you're ranked high on the waitlist? Honestly, I don't think you should sign up for the January MCAT. Especially if you haven't been planning on taking it and studying for it. I sent a letter of intent before I received my interview invite from AZCOM and if I get waitlisted post-interview I will send updates and more LOIs until the fat lady sings (a.k.a the end of August). If I were you just send your LOI and if you have anything important to update them with do so. I don't think it would hurt to call every great once in a while depending on how their waitlist works. Do what you can to show them you really really want it.

I would retake it if you're ready, what harm could it do, other than destroy your social life for the 2 weeks left in the month? BUT ONLY RETAKE IT IF YOU KNOW YOU'RE GOING TO DO BETTER! I retook it once after getting a 21P on the first one, busted my butt and pulled a 28P. How did you interview go? I remember being not at all confident leaving it, but really, the questions they asked weren't so much what you are, it's more how you think, and I answered them to the best of my knowedge and even acknowedged some shortcomings

GOOD LUCK MEGGIE!

Didn't know you landed an interview, I need to schedule mine........

You should schedule yours for February 29. 😉 I sent my letter of intent on 12/20 and called the director of admissions that afternoon and he told me I would be getting an interview and got the official invite the next day via e-mail. I was so excited!! (and still am) 😀

thanks for all the advice and good luck vibes, everyone, esp EEL and superfan! I have a day off from work on Sunday, so I think I'll take a full-length practice MCAT. If I don't get above a 29 on it, I'll just be happy with a LOI and a prayer. I thought my interview went OK, but it's so hard to tell with these things. I'm lucky to have one acceptance, I just really want TouroCOM!

No problem. 🙂 Sounds like a good plan. It's just not worth retaking if you score lower, the same or even just a little bit higher. They offered you the interview based on the info they already have so they already like you. I think if you could increase by several points that would be great but I'm also a big fan of the LOI. Well I've got to go to bed now but let us know what you decide. :luck:

Ok...Here is what I would do, since that is the only advice I can give, now that the whole pretty girl identity crisis thing is done with. 😉 I'd continue through with the application cycle, but also study hard for the mcat and retake it early summer sometime. Basically prepare for the application. It is really too late to stand a fair shot, but you can work your ass off and blow the mcat open at a later date...if you don't get in anywhere. For applying DO your score isn't absolutely horrendous...it isn't stellar, but I've seen worse. So perk up and go through the gauntlet that is medical school application.

Thanks again EEL 🙂

MossPoh, thanks for the advice, but I already have an acceptance so taking the MCAT in a couple of weeks would really just be to increase my chances at my top choice, Touro-NY. And I have to make a decision soon about this MCAT... uuuugh

Just take the acceptance then. Schools kind of frown upon the getting accepted and then reapplying. 😉
