Hey everyone,
Just had a quick Mcat question. I have applied to several US DO schools. My gpa is a 3.9 but I have written the Mcat 3 times. On my first Mcat I received a 3 (don't know how that happened) in verbal but it improved on my subsequent mcat's to 6 and 7 (over 26). How much will my 3 hurt me 1) to get interviews and 2) possibly in interviews.

Thanks

What is your highest verbal score? A 7? At a lot of places, a 7 is the minimum cutoff. You should be okay with your good GPA and a 26.

As JaggerPlate said, you should be fine with a 3.9 and 26 MCAT. I believe most schools take the highest score, you can contact them individually to find out.

As far as I know, past scores might be brought up in an interview (Is there any reason you did so poorly on your first tests in comparison to your 26? etc..).

Remember, if you get an interview after sending all of your scores, it's because the school is seriously considering having you as a student. If you've been invited to an interview with prior low score, it may come up in the interview but won't be a reason to kick you out... unless your reason isn't good enough 😀

My stats were really similar except my MCAT was more balanced and I received many interviews/acceptances. However, I applied super early in the cycle. Don't waste your money with Nova since it seems like they only take those with higher MCAT scores.

In one interview an M.D. (at a D.O. school) asked me why I did not do so well on my first MCAT. I answered that it was just a fluke, one day thing. He said he was more concerned with GPA b/c that shows years of hard work and not just one day like the MCAT.

I've never applied to D.O. schools before, and am unaware of the small differences between osteo- and allopathic school application processes.
Do you know whether you are required to release all of your previous MCAT scores to DO schools or can you select the set of scores you wish to release? I know this isn't an option with MD schools, not sure about DO, though.
Also, do the majority of schools take your best set of scores if all of them are released or do they look at the most recent one or maybe even the best section scores among different sets?

Thanks!

If you have "written the MCAT," I believe it would be safe to say that English might not be your primary language. If that is the case, I would think admissions would cut you a little bit of slack. You're a solid applicant and like others have said, a lot of schools will look at your highest score.
