well after a long debate of..2 days..(haha)
I decided to goto MCG over penn and columbia.
( I am a GA resident)
man it sucks to give up such great schools with
nice campus (especially penn) but what it boils down
to is...the cost. d school isn't gonna be whole lot of fun
wherever I go and the thought of paying 2500 dollars/month after
graduation will really really frustrate me. ( I rather do stuff with that money,
like buying a flat screen TV or traveling to the exotic islands in caribbean)
I chose to stick with a better quality of life over
the reputation and prestige of those schools.

does anyone feel me?
do you guys think this is a smart choice I made?

man, philly would've been fun though
Augusta, here I come

Yeah, go with your gut feeling. Cost is always an issue and as long as you feel comfortable with your decision then that is the right decision.

I'll see you at MCG. The debt is inevitable, but you have the option to reduce it significantly due to tuition, living expense, etc. Check the weather in Philly in the winter, that is enough reason to stay away!

I think I saw a couple of threds you made asking this same question in dental forum...
I know it is a hard decision. but if you have a choice of going to a much cheaper school.. and you would rather have a more relaxed life after schooling.. then go for it~! why not?. I think you made a wise decision.

it is hard to give up those schools like penn or columbia..But you have something to pay that off later! less debt~! haha

just FYI I chose Columbia over my state school(UCLA). because my state school costs just a bit less or as much as Columbia..roughly 50K/year for tuition and fee.

I'd go Columbia 😉
Just due to either way your going to be significantly in debt

i think i'm leaning towards mcg as well. i got into nova and louisville and they were both nice schools, but i can't justify spending that much money when mcg would get me the same degree and job. i really really liked louisville and living in ft lauderdale would've made every day a little bit easier...but mcg is just too cheap for me to pass up. i'm feelin' ya on the state school dilemma. i think/hope we'll be glad we went the cheap route when the student loan bills start rolling in.

my parents are going to put me through my state school so I will have zero debt. didn't like columbia ( met d1 students there and they seem to complain alot after only a couple months of program. well I know not everyone's like that but in generally, everyone has been saying that clinical experience is not enough) and really liked penn but just can't justify the cost of going there.
I mean really. before I even step into the real world of practice, I will have +300K in debt? I wouldnt know how to deal with that pressure \
plus MCG gives lots of clinical experience, cheaper than other schools, and close to home... it makes more sense for me to go there.

Would you be considering MCG if its price was similar to your other choices?

As a dentist, would you be able to pay back an extra $200,000 in debt if you attend a private school?

The different questions you ask yourself will lead you to different decisions on where to attend. Remember that dental school will last 4 years! Think about how large an impact your 4 years in college had on your happiness.

MCG is an older school, and is in the process of raising the funds to replacing their facilities. The school has a lot of promise, but the new facilities won't be realized during your tenure there.

Consider the location as well. These four years are an opportunity to experience life in a vibrant city. Decide where you would be happiest. If it's not Augusta, GA, is the savings is worth it to you? You will be sacrificing the chance to experience life in the heart of a city like Philadelphia.

People at MCG are still trying to pass the first 2 yrs. You won't be experiencing the city, per se. Atlanta's 3 hrs away, and it's just alright. Athens is about the same number of hrs away, and it's just alright.

There are too many things to benefit from at MCG. For girls, less debt could mean an immediate start on life. It's a good option if she wants to get married before no guy'd want her.

Personally, I like MSG (monosodium glutamate) over duck or pork rather than over Columbia and Penn.
Oh, I'm sorry....you said MCG.....same thing?

what about the quality of life for your next 4 years?

If I got in to UPenn, I wouldn't even consider going to MCG. MCG is a great school but it can't compare with UPenn. You will have so many more oppurtunities, and memories in phillidelphia, going to one of the best dental schools in the nation. I think that overrides money. Not to mention this your chance to get out of Georgia, and experience something new for four years.
Really consider it before you make a commitment.

dude come on "quality of life" might be a little over the top...augusta is not that bad and mcg has great program for an unbelievable price...youre making it sound as though its completely handicapping...you obviously dont know what the hell youre talking about

MCG is beat compared to upenn, plain and simple

lol....and what's your statement based on? do you have experience with the MCG? didn't think so...

OP, you made the right decision by choosing MCG. you will walk away with the same degree at a fraction of the price.

congrats on your success and best of luck,
jb!🙂

I wouldn't take advice from anyone who watches "24" big guy

I feel you....

My Kaplan instructor was from penn and he was not ready to go out in the real world and start practising at the end of his senior year. He said there were many in his class who felt the same way after paying 80K/ year....

You have made a right choice...

Good Luck

These threads seem to come up year after year with the same responses.

If you were to go over to dentaltown.com, where real practicing dentists post, and pose this question, 99% would respond with "Go to the cheapest school possible. In my many years in practice, I can count on one hand how many times I've been asked where I went to school." Many dentists will also say "It doesn't matter where you go to school; the quality of your education if based upon the effort you put in while in school."

So who would you rather listen to: many dentists who've been practicing for years who have the experience and knowledge upon which to give you an educated response? Or a bunch of predents or D1's who have yet to see a real patient yet and have absolutely no idea how long it would take to pay back $300,000 in loans?

If I were in your shoes, I would listen to real dentists. They would tell you to go to MCG over Columbia and Penn in a heartbeat.

Let's just all go to the cheapest schools we can. Nothing else really matters anyway. Seriously.

For the people who are trying to make a decision, take a step back for a moment. You will make enough money to live very comfortably regardless of what school you go to. All the people who are going to schools other than MCG are not going to be poor.

You have one chance to go to dental school. Decide if you want to spend those four years in Augusta or in a city with culture and an outlet when you take a break from studying.

This just isn't something you can or should decide based on money. Remember, you are making an investment in yourself and your happiness. You will make enough money regardless of where you go.

The other schools that people here have as options are in such great locations, and have such nice facilities. I would trade MCG for UPenn or UNC in a heartbeat, for the education as well the quality of life.

So take weekend trips to Manhattan during dental school. Or practice on 34th St when you have money. Not every one lived an empty life in college or expects to live one during dental school.

Go to MCG, take trips to NYC, SF, LA, Boston, Vancouver, etc.... It'll cost a whole lot less than living in Manhattan.

Best advice anyone has given. I agree to the fullest.

Make the decision on your own. Don't let anyone on this thread persuade you one way or the other. It's funny to see the people that are trying to talk you out of MCG... I wonder where they are waitlisted?😉

It sounds like you have already made a solid decision and no one here could convince you. However, for many other people outta there, Columbia or Penn will beat out MCG any day.

Harvarddent, shouldn't your name be Columbiadent?

wow I didn't know my thread was gonna be so long!
I feel good about this. 🙂

well I already made my decision to goto MCG
I know penn's great, columbia's great
but I am not just going to MCG just becuase it's cheap
students there get crazy amt of clinical experience.
they have to take the first part of borads after the first year
and they see patients from D2. they said that most people are
very competent in terms of hand skills after they graduate.
I want to be able to do stuff when I get out (they have to
do 15 crowns whereas some students at columbia don't even
do one before they graduate)
if penn and columbia provide that kind of clinical training,I would
def consider going one of those schools.

In my area, there is a dentist who went to temple
and a lot of people wanna go see him because people say
he does a very great job not hurting a patient. I think in the
end that's all that matters. I am not going into research so
there is no reason for me to goto schools where they promote
students learn about every little thing. I just wanna come out
with experience hands and be a good dentist.

I know many people are like
"this girl wants to live in Augusta whereas she can live in
philly or NY for next 4 yrs??"
hehe I know Augusta is not that great but who cares
I went to an undergrad near a big city (in cali), but after 2 years
barely went to the city because me and my friends were
having fun hanging out at home/ local area and was
too busy studying. Didn't really have time to go out
A LOT. if undergrad was like that, imagine dental school.
what difference does it make if I am gonna lock up myself
in my apartment whether I live in Augusta or NY? ( rather
pay cheap rent to get a nice apartment in augusta without
having to go find roomates who don't clean)
I already had the "explore the new place / people" experience
during my undergrad years, so I am treating grad school kind of like
a job. for me, meeting different people at a new place doesn't
justify paying 300K.

that's where I am coming from.
