I was set on attending Medical College of Georgia, but I was offered a spot off the waitlist at UVA today. Career vs. comfort?

MCG
Pros:
- in state tuition, COA ~ $50,000/year
- close to family, boyfriend, college friends
- already have housing
- know many people attending
Cons:
- less opportunities for residency?
- ranked lower
- 2 year preclinical curriculum

UVA:
Pros:
- was told at interview "the UVA name opens doors for residency interviews"
- ranked higher
- really liked 1.5 year preclinical curriculum
Cons:
- more expensive ~$80,000/year (don't know about financial aid yet), higher cost of living
- far away from family, likely would have to fly home
- very last minute, need housing

Obviously UVA is the better program and would likely open some doors when it comes to residency, but I'm wondering if the big move, more expensive COA, and leaving my family is worth it. Honestly, I think I'd be happy staying in Georgia for my residency and career and would obviously still work my butt off at MCG to be competitive. Professionally, I feel like UVA is the right choice, but I don't really want to go. I'd love some input from someone with an unbiased perspective.

You say you don't want to go, so I think that is exactly what you should do! It is 4 years of your life and if you are going to compromise your happiness then I personally do not think it is worth it. People may not agree with your decision/understand your rationale but at the end of the day you don't have to explain yourself to people, just do what makes you happy. Also, if you want to stay in Georgia I do not think your opportunities will be limited for residency matching there from MCG

I would go with MCG. With a great score on STEP 1, you shouldn't feel too worried about residency opportunities when comparing these two schools.

Guys, this thread was made 3 weeks ago and UVA's CTE deadline was July 1st. I'm sure that OP doesn't need more feedback on this.
