Historic Lofts on Kilbourn is getting really close to the ghetto inner city of Milwaukee. It's also pretty close to Marquette, but I wouldn't be a big fan of walking around there at night. Anything west of 60th should be fine pretty much. Or if it has "East" in the address (e.g., 2300 E. Park as opposed to 1700 W. North, which is in a really bad neighborhood).

I live on 90th and North, and you couldn't ask for a nicer neighborhood in suburbia.

What about The Reserve, Normandy Village, and Serafino Square Apartments? Are they close to school? I am planning on coming out a weekend in June so is it a good idea to set up appointments to look around before I visit? I have heard for houses it is best to drive around to see what is for rent, but will that give you time to call the landlord and then actually look at them if you are there for just a weekend? Sorry so many questions! Thanks!

or The Fountains of Wauwatosa?

I was just looking at those and they seem nice, but I can't tell how close places are to MCW. I suppose I could stop being lazy and look at a map. 🙂 For a two bedroom those start at $745, is that average for around Wauwatosa? Plus heat is included, so that makes a difference each month I guess.

It's good to set up appointments if you can, but be prepared to drive around with your cell phone and spot signs, especially if you're interested in a duplex or townhouse rather than a larger apartment complex. A lot of these smaller places are owned by people with day jobs, so the weekends are the best time for them to show.

As far as I have found, there are no BAD neighborhoods in Wauwatosa proper. Be on the alert for off-street parking, as you CANNOT park overnight on the street in Tosa. IT'S THE LAW. Dunno why.

Once finals are over, I'll start taking a notecard and pen with me when I go running in my neighborhood and I'll post a few phone numbers. But don't count on too much; I don't run all that far!

According to Mapquest, 6.58 miles from the school to the Fountains.

I live at Normandy Village. Pretty decent, and great for pet owners. However, since I live by myself, it's too expensive for me, and I need to move. Keep in mind that the budget the school puts out assumes that you have a roommate.

But, yeah, Normandy is good. About 10 minute drive to school. Target and grocery stores and restaurants nearby. Mall down the street ~2 minutes. There's an outdoor pool and workout facility. The office takes UPS packages for you (on the 2nd attempt), which is convenient. Storage area in basement. BIG bedroom closet, not walk-in though. But I have a ton of clothes and shoes, and it's big enough for me. 🙂 Patio/balcony. Underground parking for extra. Included heat. Central air. I have the medium sized 1 bedroom, and it's pretty open and spacious. I pay $740/month plus $20 pet rent for my dog. I'm guessing rent is going up like $10 or $20 this year, but I don't know for sure.

I was on the waitlist, and happened to be in Milwaukee when I found out I got in. So a friend and I picked up a newspaper, drove around and called places and was able to look at some the next day. Didn't have an appointment scheduled when I came to Normandy and it worked out fine, although an appointment wouldn't hurt. This was in mid-July.

Many students live at the Reserve, some live at Serafino. I think Serafino is along the same lines as Normandy as far as price and quality. The Reserve is more. Newer building than Normandy, but no utilities included there, and I hear the walls are drafty. But still good apartments. Ashers can comment more on the Reserve. I have no idea about the Fountain apartments - don't know where they are.

Driving around the area, looking at signs posted at school, and the newspaper are good resources. Try online classifieds. I found apartments.com didn't help much because it was really only the big complexes, and for Tosa, pretty much only lists what y'all have mentioned already.

Hope that helps!

akpete, Serafino is more expensive than Normandy - I looked. The equivalent units at Serafino were about $1050 compared to like $800 at Normandy. You're getting more for your buck, but it's still just a 2 bedroom apartment.

I might be wrong here, but I thought that the Fountains was kind of a dive. I could be thinking of the wrong place though. There was some place called Poolside or Park by the Pool, something like that, and it was HORRIBLE. Don't even bother.

If we had two cars, I would have been looking at the neighborhood around 65th and North. My friend had a lower flat there for $750 a month (large 2 bedroom) that was really nice. It's still quite close to campus (76th goes down to Watertown Plank, with a few funny twists and turns).

I live in a two bedroom apartment. Hardwood floors, dishwasher, 2.5 miles from school $650/month. They allow kitties, which is the real reason I picked them.

A few weeks ago I went to Wauwatosa to look for housing. I saw the Reserve and Serafino Square and a few others. I am pretty sure I am gonna live in the Reserve-- the closets are so huge I could like live in them. I am so sick of trying to jam all my clothes into tiny closets in Chicago apartments! The only thing I dislike about the Reserve is that no utilities are included. You even have to pay for sewer or something but the girl said that's only a few dollars.

I live in the harwood apts walking distance from school(.8 miles and driving only saves me 3 mins). 2 br and 1.5 baths decent size but kinda small kitchen. heat and underground parkin included. 90% of the apts are rented by students. 800 bucks a month

Is it too late to look for apartments in mid-June? When do you suggest going? I don't have to schedule flights so I can pretty much go anytime. Just need 6 hrs to make it there.

June is okay for house-hunting, I think. There were still signs up in August when orientation started! Just a note for people hunting, you can call Wisconsin Energies with the address of any apartment you're considering and they'll tell you what the average gas/electric bills were last year.

we energies phone number is 800-242-9137. They have been very friendly in my experience. Although the 15% rate increase they are seeking is not too friendly.

I just checked that place out a week ago or so. Wasn't too impressed - I've got a similar place for $675 a month. The included heat was nice though.

please elaborate.

Oh, and mid-June is definitely not too late. I didn't get a place until mid-July. Although in June will have more choice probably then in July.

location, location, location I'm guessing. It's walking distance to both school and the bars.

Okay, people. I saw a upper double 2BR for rent on Stevenson and 72nd this morning. PM me if you want the phone number.

frickin' A. I took the practice exam for phys from block 1, and I got almost all the same ones wrong as when I took it right before block 1. Apparently I don't like to learn from my mistakes.

Just means you're consistent in your thinking process. I look at that as a good thing.

Mind-numbingly so.

I can get 12 wrong on the phys final. I would honestly be happier if I got 20 than if I got 13 wrong. If I get 13 wrong, I'm going on a (computer) killing spree.

You would get over it. You would still have permission to complain about it though next year. Then you rev up your studying so that never happens again.

Oh, but it probably would, because I already biffed the biochem final by just a few percent.

So, I got a package yesterday from MCW and they suggest studying for biochem. Is this really helpful or not really? What textbooks do you use for the class? I have two biochem textbooks in a box somewhere... along with a giant metabolic chart. Do we have to memorize the whole thing again? I'm assuming yes. Should I spend July studying or just forget about it?

DO NOT STUDY BIOCHEM!!!!!!!!

You may want to start studying M1 psych stuff though. Still my lowest med school grade, which I think is pretty awesome.

J/K!!!! Don't study.

I actually did study a little bit. But if you've had biochem before, don't go nuts. You could pull out your big, giant chart and guiltily glance over it if you want to. But don't, like, make a big, fat study schedule and work it every day or anything. Life's too short.

Wow, that's impressive. There's really almost no conceivable way for me to do better than I did in psych. But we had a (very) focused review, and you guys didn't.

This is one of your last summer vacations. Don't waste it with med school stuff.

You will be spending more than enough time studying soon enough.

So did we.

Class of 2009 really got hosed on that one.

'07 got hosed more. Dr. McBride was in Iraq so they had someone else.

What is the name of the apartments if you dont mind me asking

Mayfair Manor.

Well, today I was faced with the decision that I had hoped I would not have to make. I was accepted off the alternate list at IU, my state school. I have absolutely NO IDEA what I'm going to do or where I'm leaning towards. I absolutely love MCW, but being an hour away from home and paying $15-20 grand less per year is also very attractive to me. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance for all of your help.

Also, do you think Istawan would grant me an extra week extension so I could visit both IU and MCW one more time? They gave me a deadline of next Wednesday (4/30) to decide. This doesn't give me the opportunity to visit MCW -- 5 hours away.

I wouldn't extend your deadline. there are tons of people on the waitlist that don't need more time.

Do you mean 5/30?

Anyway, call him up and ask - can't hurt right. Good luck making your decision. Pick the place you see yourself being happy at.

Well, if they get into two schools they might. Be nice!

Look at it this way - the next four years are going to be pretty tough. Try to smooth out the things that you can, and then pick the school where you think you will be able to excel the most. I doubt the reputations between either school are going to make a difference, but if you're happy at one school and miserable at another, it will make a difference. I know I would have a harder time doing well if I really disliked my school (which I don't - I like it here). If you think you'll visit your family often, and that they will be a big support to you, then maybe you should stay in Indiana. If you're not going to visit them much anyways, then don't let it be a factor.

If you're interested in a specialty that may not pay well, then maybe finances are a bigger deal, but for the most part, doctors don't have that much trouble paying off their loans.

I had to make a similar decision between MCW and UIC/SIU (my state schools), but ended up choosing MCW because I liked it more...a lower price, I've realized, will not make up for me being unhappy.

If you like your state school, though, go there and save money/be close to home!

Uh-oh. 12 hours until the LAST FINAL, and I think I sprained my give-a-darn.

So, I'm coming to Milwaukee June 10th-14th. Is there an event going on in Milwaukee?? A lot of the hotels were booked! I ended up getting one of the last rooms at the Holiday Inn near the school. I had the choice between a smoking or non smoking wheelchair accessible room. I chose the wheelchair accessible one. This should be interesting...

Milwaukee PrideFest is that weekend.

Each year, PrideFest energizes the shores of Milwaukee's lakefront with Wisconsin's largest celebration of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) culture and community. This year, thousands of people will enjoy one of the best Pride entertainment lineups in the nation, catch up with old friends and make new ones, and renew their sense of Pride. We hope to see you June 8th, 9th and 10th as we celebrate PrideFest, where Midwest Pride Meets on Milwaukee's Lakefront!

Does anyone know how much a membership to the Wisconsin Athletic Club or the YMCA near Wauwatosa costs? Are there student discounts? I ask because I definately want to stay in shape the best I can while in school. Also, how far away is West Allis from Wauwatosa?

Someone can probably answer more accurately for the WAC, but I seem to recall membership being ~$30/month. Could be $50, though. I remember that it wasn't cheap. I have no idea for the YMCA.

Another option available is the Wisconsin Lutheran College's athletic facility. It's right on the other side of the hospital complex from the med school campus, and is a lot cheaper than the WAC ($50/semester, I think). I have a buddy who goes there to swim, and he likes it a lot.

You should be able to get a 2 week free trial to the WAC when you get here to see if it's worth the dinero.

West Allis is just south of Wauwatosa. Pretty much anyplace in West Allis should be a hop, skip, and a jump from school, although there are areas of the town that I wouldn't want to live in so make sure you check out anyplace you're thinking about before signing a lease.

How much do you guys pay for basic cable in your area? How about internet? Wireless, high speed? Expensive? I pretty sure I need internet. Do some apartments have it included?
