I am interested to hear what other people would say are the positives of MCW. I think they have a great atmosphere as well as an amazing Children's Hospital. Please chime in!

I live a few minutes away from MCW - if any one has questions about the area let me know.

Best at sending people things after the MCAT. 2nd place is Wash U.

Any areas in Wauwatosa to not look for housing (safety wise)?

Nope...anywhere you go in Tosa is pretty safe, especially within a few miles of campus. In all honesty, there are only a few places in the metro area that I wouldn't want to live, and those are pretty evident by the drop in rent.

What places give you the best bang for your buck? We were looking at the Normandy Village apartments and the Reserve on the internet. Any comments on either of these places? Should we just stick to renting from an owner of a duplex?

I think that their interview process is awful but the school does seem nice.. big, but nice.
What did you dislike about it so much?

You can't say the words Wauwatosa and dangerous in the same sentence. If you're in Tosa, you're safe. For the most part though, Milwaukee's a safe city for a guy. I'd be a bit concerned in some areas if I was a woman, but unless you're pusing drugs or flashing gang symbols at a car full of thugs, you'll be fine.

Good to hear it's quite safe. I looked at those places on the web also. Normandy Village seams reasonable, but the Reserve is really expensive and doesn't include heat or water. It looks really nice, though, and has a washer and a dryer. I live in a house now and it's definitely going to be rough going back to apartment life 🙁

yeah, I agree. The suburbs are all nice. I've gone around downtown at night with just another female with me and really have never felt too unsafe. There was only one time that I did and that was only because we weren't in a main part of downtown and so almost everything around us was closed.

I haven't seen Normandy, but I'm actually moving into The Reserve next month. I'm still an undergrad but I'm hoping to get into MCW and not have to move anymore. The Reserve can be expensive, I guess, but that all depends on your conception of expensive.
Compared to on campus housing at Marquette, it's pretty reasonable. I guess it was built about 4 years ago but the apartments look like they're brand new. It's really nice to have a washer and dryer, the rooms are pretty big and in the 2 BR/2 Bath, each room has plenty of closet space. Every apartment has a patio/deck. The only thing I don't like about the place is that the living room is kinda small, but we (g/f and 3rd roommate) loved everything about the place. For the 2Br/2 Bath I think we'll be looking at $1300/month, that's including $100 for utilities/electricity and about $80 for internet/cable.

I currently live downtown in my hometown and don't want to leave urban living. Does anyone have any recs of buildings that are nice/cool/in a good location downtown or close to downtown. (Lofts, condos, or apartments are what I am looking for mainly) Also, how long does it take to get from downtown to Tosa?

Thanks!!! 👍

I'll try to address a few of these issues...

1. Like stated above, Tosa is safe. Period.
2. The Reserve is pretty expensive relative to other places in the area. It's also nicer relative to other places in the area; you get what you pay for, I suppose, though I never felt that "niceness" of The Reserve was worth the extra dough. Normandy is also nice (probably less so, but still nicer than most places). It doesn't cost as much as the reserve, but it's still probably a few more bucks than others. I know of several students/residents that live at each.
3. As far as Zapp's concerns about leaving the house setting for an apt, it's totally not necessary. I (and most of my friends) live in residential neighborhoods in houses/flats/duplexes. Probably the best way to find a place around here is to drive around looking for yard signs, as this is how most private owners advertise. There are also several postings on bulletin boards around school, which is how we found our place (we actually rent from a 4th year who lives in the other half of our duplex).
4. If you don't want to leave the urban setting, you absolutely don't have to. Many people live downtown or on the east side. You'll find a younger, more trendy atmosphere there, and you'll usually pay a bit more (and parking can sometimes be a pain in the ass). Barring traffic, you'll be a 10-20 minute drive to campus; however, in the clinical years, you'll have some rotations that will be in that area (maybe within walking distance, even) so this will be less of an issue. You'll also usually beat traffic by at least an hour, unfortunately.
5. The interview process was "awful"? One of the reasons I chose MCW was the incredible experience I had when I interviewed. Hmmm. Mabye you drew the short straw or something, because this isn't something I've heard very often. Sorry you had less than a great experience--that's pretty unusual, I think.

OK, I think that's it. Congrats to all of you who are planning on joining us next year. I think you'll be happy with your decision to come here. Feel free to post other ?s.

I was thinking about buying a condo in waukesha off I 94 and E north St/WI-164. I currently live in GA and havent been to the area (hopefully i can visit in the next month). Do a lot of student live in waukesha and what is the area like..is it safe, are there places to eat, ect ? Mapquest says the communte is about 14 miles...is there usually traffic on 94 and do you know what the commute time would be?

thanks

PS...i would appreciate it if you could post condo for sale info if you see flyers at school 😀

I just withdrew my spot at MCW this week, and I was sad! 🙁

MCW had the nicest students and faculty I met throughout my interviews. People who were willing to help out in any possible way and answer any and all questions. There was a warm community feel to the school too.

Also, MCW has very nice facilities. The main medical education building is impressive. Also, as mentioned before, the children's hospital is fantastic.

Maybe thats because you were from California, and they get those applicants without having to advertise?

pratik--I do know several students that live in Waukesha. They tend to be married with families, since Waukesha isn't necessarily the hippest place around, though it does tend to be cheaper, I think. Many of the students that live out there somehow qualify for gov't assisted housing (I don't know how/why). Waukesha is certainly safe, and I think the population is ~60K, so it probably has everything you need. As for the drive, I'd say 15 miles is about right. The length of the actual commute depends on when you're driving (I did a surgery rotation out there--no problem with traffic at 5AM). There is a decent amount of traffic going into/out of the city at normal traffic hours, but I don't think it ever took me more than 30 minutes or so.

Hope this helps. If you have any more Waukesha-related questions, I am not your man...everything I know about the place is right here.

When I was looking for apartments, I found a pretty good website that helped out a lot.

www.aptshowcase.com

If you click on Milwaukee you can narrow down your search to just the downtown area or any surrounding area. Downtown I have physically toured Yankee Hill, Library Hill, East Point, Juneau Village, and City Hall Square so if you have any questions about them, feel free to PM me.

www.startrenting.com is great for both Milwaukee and Madison. It lets you search by area and all sorts of other settings, like pets, in unit laundry, etc, and there are places that are privately owned listed in there as well.

Also, if you have any Waukesha questions, that's where I'm from, so feel free to send them this way. 😀

How is the West Allis area? There appear to be a lot of apartments around the Lincoln and 102nd street area. Thanks.

I94 always has traffic, but not like Chicago or anything. I know the whole city pretty well, but not much about Waukesha.

West Allis is decent. Hwy 100 is cruising heaven.

There are many apartments within close proximity to MCW. West Allis is typically a bit cheaper than 'Tosa... The renting sites given above are decent - we found our place through there 4 years ago...
