MCW Class of 2010, Part 3

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I haven't written a coop in two years, so either you read a real old coop or someone didn't change the name.

He calls everyone Dr. Dr. Splat, Dr. Stringbean, Dr. Ashers, etc. I'm Xandie. I think it's a combination of my youthful charm (aka I look 16, apparently), and the fact that I'm goofy as all get out. Oh well, at least I'm fun.

Oh yeah, and thank baby you know who that my name is no longer anything that would be called Krizzo. It's now the best name EVER. Hints: four letters, precious metal. I am a champ.

It was a really old coop.
Zinc!

Zinc is a precious metal...precious to the metalloproteases that depend on it

When was I writing coops about genital lesions?

Can I express my sincere thanks that I'm an M-4? Even as I spend like a million dollars today on plane tickets. That part hurts.

It wasn't a genital lecture but it was an infectious disease (micro) lecture. I think.

Congrats.

where the hell are they getting these last names?

I hate it when there's a lecturer who has a very "lean" hand-out for a path lecture, and this is the first time it's been done, so there's no existing co-op for it. 😡

Can we register for Step I at any time? I checked out the website but couldn't find a date. Although, I didn't read the 45 page PDF file.

edit: 6 months ahead of time is the max.

I was under the impression that we'd have to register for it in December. There goes $500.

I was registered in November, but was one of the first people in the class to sign up I think. The benefit was that I got complete choice for the date of the exam.

I registered for it in January. I took it the day before I wanted to... the Thursday instead of the Friday.

Late dates usually aren't taken because only crazy people take the exam that late, or they go crazy in the process of studying. Right, Splat?

Well, we have one week less than you guys did, and I would like to do quite well....

did you all feel prepared by MCW's classes?

LOL! You're kidding right?

Well, maybe for pharm, since I used the notes and notecards to study for step 1.

I looked up a couple of things in my biochem and path notes the night before and morning of the exam.

Oh, and I took it 3.5 weeks out.

So, neuro was no good?

In 3.5 weeks did you burn out at all?

No, studying for boards was actually pretty fun. I played tennis, went running, biking, and had lunch with friends every day. But that's more of because with whom I studied. (And one of my friends had told me that studying for step 1 would be one of the most miserable times of med school.) I probably could've studied for a total of 4 without going crazy, but I finished Qbank.

I burnt out 3 times during M2 year though. Once right before block 3 1st semester, and twice second semester.

btw... what's neuro? 😉

Neuro is a Monet painting--Lots of individual points of information with no real structure unless you stand a mile away.

edit: make that a simulated Monet painting that was created by 300 different artists that all aggressively claim that their dot is the most important dot on the painting.

I thought the classes were adequate except for path and neuro. The problem was that I had forgotten all of it.

Goljan prepared me best for step 1. And USMLE World. Boo Qbank!

I took it on June 12, so it was a month. But it wasn't a month solid. I went home for 2 weeks and didn't study at all on the weekends or evenings while there. And then my cousin and friend came to visit first weekend in June, so didn't study another 3 days there. I had mapped out a schedule to cover all the subjects adequately complete with days off and days for just NBME test-taking, etc. And I stuck with the schedule. If I didn't finish a topic, too bad, I moved on to the next item on the list the next day.

No burn out. Panic a little in the final days. Extremely drunk that night.

Did you all focus more on your strong points or your weak points? I'm thinking that I might focus more on my strong points than my weak ones (aka, phys, not biochem), with some exceptions, like devo, because I've heard that's pretty important.

I basically went through everything. I guess you could say I focused on Path, but that's also a proportionally larger section too.

I think I spent 1 day on devo.

i focused on the first two years of med school.

Wait, what about Trig? Did you go back and study Trig?

Are you kidding? I love to throw stuff out. Besides (you KNOW I was dying to say this) my ACT scores are older than you are.

The packrat gene is on the X chrom.

I think it's more that the anti-packrat gene is on the Y chromosome, since having it on the X chromosome means that if it's dominant, we'd all have it, and if it was recessive, it would still appear dominant because of the one gene issue.

I love genetics. There's a joint maternal-fetal medicine/genetics fellowship following OB/GYN. Dream job, here I come!

Maybe it is methylated in the presence of a Y chromosome.

When does 3rd year actually start?

edit: nevermind.

I like the anti-packrat gene idea. It could code for a protein creates neurons that freak out with clutter.

<---makes appointment to get checked for y chromosome.

love those epigenetics

My dad is a packrat, my mom is not. My mom throws out my dad's and my stuff without telling us.

I was in Sweden once, and I found a hat that for which I had been looking for years. My mom gave it away while I was in college.

That would explain how you planned to "grow a pair."

That's it! I'll use my aberrant "throw away old stuff I don't need" gene.

Wait, my mom has it, too. And I'm pretty sure my mom had a uterus at one time, so no testicular feminization syndrome there. Maybe we need a new theory.

So tell me again, please, '09ers, how do I study for the ethics final?

I don't remember studying for it. I suppose that's why even though my small group leaders pretty much gave everyone a 100%, I still only got a high pass in the class.

for some reason when i first posted this it didn't go thru.

i read all the readings the night before; the day of,i read all the notes. i got a 94%.

now i'm at honda on my pda cuz i ruined the passenger mirror on my car on saturday. then my stupid cap fell off my tooth again after surgery and i've cemented it four times already.

this week sucks

Geeze.
I don't know what your drink of choice is but I'd send you 2 of 'em.
