MCW Class of 2010, Part 3

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Oops. You said, "respectable". Never mind. Pity. My roommate hid the crack, I mean candied pumpkins, and I'm desperate.

Candy pumpkins are 99c at Sentry. 😉 I need to go buy more soon. I'm so addicted to those. 😀 Yay for slacking -- sorta... I'm actually studying in my lab, since I have to do stuff for an experiment soon, and it's not as crowded as the library.

I'll be working next to Sabina's lab in about 45 min, but I didn't see him when I walked by earlier... I bet he's hiding all the exams.

I would just like to declare that I am officially (maybe) done with going to lecture. Foreva.

Why, you may ask? Well it took me quite some time, but I finally discovered the joys of listening to the mp3 recordings of the lectures at 2x speed on Windows Media Player 10. Now I can sit at my computer with the powerpoint open, listening to the mp3 and pausing anytime I need to make notes or rewinding to listen to difficult portions of lecture. All while taking less time than it took for me to sit in those uncomfortable chairs in the HRC while paying attention to everything but the lecturer for hours on end.

If that isn't enough reason, I also have a remote for my computer (we have a TV tuner installed) that allows me to advance slides on the powerpoint and control windows media player. Straight money.

So yeah, please don't think I'm dead and/or antisocial if I'm not cruising the hallways as much in the near future.

You're a smart man. I wish I had the courage to try that, but I like going to lecture for the social aspect, too. I've tried doing the 2x thing on the mp3s, but it's too fast for me. How do you comprehend everything they say?

This is my answer to Devo. A certain lecturer sounds SOOO much better on double speed. I dont' think it would work for me with Biochem. Too much pointing to "this atom over HERE!" I did do it for a couple of lectures when I was sick and it was a little iffy.

But, anyway, you go, boy!

But, anyway, you go, boy!

A certain devo lecturer asked me today if I got an email from him in class today, and I was like "No, didn't have class, and I couldn't find a table in the library near an outlet, so I haven't checked my email yet." Then he was like "I can't imagine how much attention you paid during my class. I said, "I didn't have a computer, then, so I had to pay attention." That's after I told him last week that I don't know how I got a high pass in devo, and that it must've been from going to his review sessions. 😀 At least I still pay some attention when my computer's out, and I stay awake during class then. =)

I can't listen to the lectures at double speed. Even if I stop them, I still rewind them so often, it takes longer. So when I have to listen to them, it's at normal speed, which is why just continue going to class.

FYI, Winamp + Pacemaker >> Windows Media Player. You can simply use the arrow keys to fast forward/rewind and C is pause, so instead of trying to click the lecture ahead or back, you use the arrows. Much easier, IMO.

As for the certain devo lecturer, I stopped attending class and didn't even think of listening to the mp3 lectures. Now that I got my grades back, and I improved on my previous score by a huge margin, I think I'll keep this strategy.

Yeah, if this plan pans out I'll definitely miss chatting with everyone. I'm hoping this might free up a little more time to do more socially outside of school though. Who knows?

I can see how some of the lecturers might be tough to listen to at 2x speed, but some of them are really bad about pausing between thoughts and slides, and a large number of our lecturers so far this year have simply been reading straight off the powerpoints. So I'm usually able to keep up with them at 2x as long as I have done a light reading of the notes beforehand.

I'm sure that in the end I'll be putting in just as much time as anyone going to class, but at least I won't have to scrape the snow off my car quite as much, and I can spend my last few months of classroom learning pretending I'm really just an unemployed slacker with a computer.

And maybe you'll get to hear your new ringtone because people will be forced to call you to see you?

Wow, you figured out my ulterior motive so quickly. Am I really that transparent?

By the way, was I not supposed to mention the ringtone in front of Marty today? I wasn't sure if it's supposed to be a surprise for him or not...

I dunno. I'm sure he's pretty confused anyway. I don't think he knows what song it is, and he rarely checks here -- unless I'm like "Marty, did you see the most recent thing we've said about you? You're famous!"

Then I'm sure he'll enjoy this. For the 2011th post in this thread (putting us over the mythical Wayne State thread) and my one and only 600th post, I would like to say:

We love you MARTY!

Ah, welcome to my world. It is bliss.

Except that I only listen to select lectures...sometimes. I heart coops...well most of them.

Anyone else suckered into buying some candy at school today? They must know it's exam time. Someone else had bought the cinnamon bears, let me try one, so then of course I HAD to have my own bag. There went $4 I don't have.

I escaped. I tasted the sample Door County sour cherry balls, and then ran like a dog with my backpack (and wallet) still on my back.

Sour cherries! MMMMMMM...and then I bought a tube of cinnamon rolls I don't need at Pic-n-Save, so I only saved a couple of bucks. But hey, cinnamon rolls! 🙂😍

You people are all insane. And the 80 hour work week is more of a guideline, really, than an actual rule... keep that in mind.

I agree, as per usual (about you all being insane).

And I've been told many times, but multiple attendings, that the "80 hour week doesn't really apply to medical students anyway, so you have to stay...."😡

Please tell me you're at least hearing this on services like OB/Gyn and Surgery rather than peds outpatient. I'd hate to have to fake my own disappearance next year when I start rotations simply to make it easier to explain my absence to friends and family.

they nutpeople got me...I blew 13 bucks on 2 bags of pecans and some sort of snack mix thing. Though, 13 bucks to get ahold of two nutsacks isn't a bad deal.

And everyone who was present in the HRC knows how excited you were that the Nutman was coming.

YOU'RE BEAUTIFUL!!!!

But you can fill your own nutsacks at Outpost for a very fair price, right there in the store and everything. It's like an orgy. Only not.

At this posting rate, we will easily surpass Oklahoma 2010 thread to become the supreme high commanding thread of allopathic class threads. Their last page of posts goes all the way back to September 29th. We've already beaten all of the osteopathic class threads. World dominance is ours for the taking!

I'm just glad we beat those Wayners.

I've curiously developed a headache. Computer must shut down now.

ps...almost done beating Halo. I really should not be doing this during exam time.

no, peds outpatient was cake. It's the medicine attendings who like to point out that little bit o' trivia, at least on the inpatient side. Outpatient remains cake (although not as good as peds).

Surgery is currently pending:scared: , but I'll let you know.

I'm dreading internal med next year. Surgery I'll love, but I might actually die.

Plus, touchy feely Tuesdays are pushing me to a career in pathology. That can't be a good sign for 3rd year.

i lied. i'm back.

i just beat the leaving crap out of Halo. Blew that giant monster of a ring thing out of the galaxy. it was glorious...i flew through the air on my jeep-thing and raced to the last flyable ship. I rule.

you can all thank me for saving earth now.

pretty much EVERYTHING in the last year and a (almost) half are pushing ME towards a career in Barnes and Noble customer service.

and I'll be lucky if I get through surgery without going crazy. i will HATE it. do they have an alternate rotation where you can move around and sit down occasionally rather than stand for 20348 hours a day? or can I just pay an extra 1,000 bucks and skip it? anything????

I hear that. Touchy Feely Tuesdays are driving me away from tons of patient contact while pathology (and the endless microscopic images) is driving me away from pathology. Meanwhile, I'm pretty sure I just don't have the necessary love for surgery. After all that, are there any specialties left to consider, or should I just start putting my CV out to pharm companies?

Thanks for saving the Earth and all, but CNN just announced that it is again in danger in....

HALO 2!!!

HALO 2!!!

NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! tell you what. Let me first finish saving the Brewers from a losing season in MLB 2003, then I'll get onto that. Or maybe after I beat the Sith from destroying the Jedi and save the republic.

Yeah, I agree. Maybe I should go back to my original ideal job... Shamu's trainer or paleontologist.

Red vs. Blue bunch of videos made with Halo.

Or on the bright side, in about three hours we'll be FREE! FREE! For DAYS!

and we can start polishing our resumes for McDonald's.

Hold off on the MickyD's resumes and enjoy these weekends, you beautiful, foolish children. You will find that very soon they will be taking these study-free weekends away from you and you'll be rolling straight from early week exams into gads of new material.

Translation: They're gonna be ruining 2 weekends , and not providing you with any to recover next semester. And next year, they ruin at least 3 weekends with studying, though block 2 path has ruined every weekend this block so far -- for me anyway. Though, I am glad that I have time to study micro next week.

Translation: You'll be learning about a bajillion factoids about a batrillion bugs next year, and need every last second to try to cram them all in. Oh, and you'll be spending all sorts of time in a microbiology lab where no one knows what they're doing and no one is familiar with the bugs with which they are working. You'll be able to gram stain like a motha though.

I've already been designated the group gram stainer, and the group bunsen burner - turner on-er (whatever).

Your cat has some wild eyes there!

My main man Helix wanted to join the party and wish everyone a happy exam week!

On a completely unrelated note...

Not a single phone call in the past 3 days. Is it wrong that I am contemplating leaving "warning shot" voicemails on my undergrad friends' phones simply to get them to call me back?

"Hey guy, just wanted to call because I'm afraid I have some bad news for you. Well, call me!"
