MCW Class of 2010, Part 3

Hey, I'm starting to feel the anatomy coming together. I don't have it all down yet, (not even close!) but just as the M2's promised, it's starting to coalesce. So tomorrow I can coalesce some more and then jump back into the wonderful world of biochem. Whee.

Antigen invasion escaped innate immunity!!! Go to DEFCON 1!!!!!!!!!!!!!

alcohol plus sharp hobby knives = my monday night!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think I might suggest to the faculty that our Touchy Feely Tuesday experience might be enhanced by forcing the entire class to come dressed in a paper schmata for a day. That way we can truly empathize with our future patients and see how they feel in those ridiculous get-ups.

Who's with me?!

Cripes, if you really WANT to see my buttocks, just ask.

ya'll have lost your damn minds. :hardy:

No, thank you. Please cover it with the jaunty hat.

Is getting 60% on practice tests a week before the block exam a GOOD thing? I am identifying my weak spots and working on them, but still, it's a little disheartening.

You're doing practice exams a week before the exam? I usually did them the day before. So to answer your question. I've got no idea.

Yeah, most people I've talked to are waiting, but I figured I'd rather know what I don't know. So I guess I ought to quit whining about the scores. 😉

60% on the prac exams is pretty damn good a week before. You have nothing to worry about. And what the heck is a schmata anywhay? According to dictionary.com its not even a word.

And yet you were sitting right in front of me in lecture. tsk.

I 😍 Zman.

All I could find is that a schmata is a rag.

Exactly...it's yiddish.

I usually did about 10-15% better on the actual exams than the practice exams. 60% a week before is right on target...if you're shooting 80% by next week you'll be doing fine. What helped me a lot was going through EVERY answer choice and figuring out what was wrong about it, and rewriting it to make it correct for the question stem.

Look at the little Jewish scholar! Where was Marty on this one, hmmm?

Yes, it means rag. I have a dish schmata (I'd never really thought about how to spell it though), a glasses schmata, and so on.

Also... yay for the end of the month and the changing of the guard.

And also... one of the first years last week offered to let me find his femoral pulse... creepy stuff, peoples, creepy stuff.

I agree with everyone else said.

The fact that you are even doing practice exams right now is a very good sign.

As a warning though, even though Andy did better on the real exam I usually did around the same. And actually on the first one, I was getting in the low 90s on the old exams (the day before the exam), but got ~85 on the real one. The other blocks were all about equal old exam scores vs. real. However, being that I'm a last minute studier, I probably didn't review the old exams as thoroughly after taking them as Andy likely did.

No he was sitting right in front of me.

As for the schmata reference. You M1s will probably watch the same video we watched today in med ethics, which was at the same time I was posting. hehehe. I didn't have a lap top with wireless internet last year. This is awesome this year.

just to complicate the issue...i think the exams are pretty much the same in terms of difficulty. However, i did do a little better on the actual only cause some of the questions reappear from old exams soo they are gimmies. Also, if you havent yet ...you may wanna check out BRS anatomy ...its GREAT. You can read an entire block of material in one evening and its full of clinical stuff that appears on the exams. I think the lib has it on reserve.

And xandie ...you wanna feel my inferior gluteal pulse ???? 😍 :scared:

And as we were messing around on our computers, we had like 3 small group leaders (MDs) sitting right behind us....hence why I closed my computer up relatively early on.

Yeah, I realized that after 2 of them hit me in the head as they walked by. But I still had to take notes on my laptop and occasionally check email. What are they going to do if I can multitask.

Check out the new facebook group I invited you to.

Seriously, that made my night. Now I'm going to pass out before Micro has a chance to ruin it.

By the way, all this talk about laptops in lecture makes me want to buy one of my own. Just think of how many episodes of Scrubs I could watch during one of these long days of lecture...

Where do we get practice tests?!

By the way, i was just at the lab and rest assured that nobody's cadaver has moved.

I'm thinking maybe Arrested Development, since season 3 just came out today. 😀

You're welcome. If you come up with titles for other people you like I can make them officers. =)

Where do we get practice tests?!

The anatomy practice test showed up in Angel a couple of mornings ago. Apparently they thought it was there all along and when they discovered it wasn't, they hurt the Angel guy and made him fix it. Or something like that. Biochem I'm just doing the weeklies at this point. Then there are more exams on reserve in the library and I'll do those this weekend. Haven't had the heart to do Devo yet.

No blood pressure training for me today... sorry if anyone was going to be looking for me! I get to go help a friend move instead... so very exciting.

And Ashleigh, lecture is terrible, especially if you mean path. I attended my last path lecture some time during October, and I honestly believe that was the best decision I have made in some time. 🙂

Yes, I mean path. Unfotunately, I can't listen to lectures online well. I basically have to make myself go to class. If I'm on SDN in class that's a different story. 😀

Why is it that lecture is already so painful, and it's only like the second week?

I haven't been to micro or path lecture since last Wed morning. However, I have been going to Psych and Ethics cause I feel like I have too. Esp since I don't really prepare for those outside of class. Oh, same for CER.

Liberate yourself Ashleigh. It's amazing how I can waste time. 😀

That heart sounds lecture with the little remote stethoscope thingies rocked my socks.

I agree, path was/is pretty bad...although I couldn't bail on it as early as Xandie.
I'm a tad to anal for that.

My opinion on path (ingest salt before reading)...
Read Robbin's, do the Robbin's review book, and you will have no trouble on the class exams or boards.

Like I said, take it with a grain of salt....but I think the time spent is well worth the investment.

Other than that, I still think BRS path does an okay job, although some swear by Guyton.

On a more personal note, I finished peds today. Way more fun than I ever thought it could be. I may even be ready for a few rugrats of my own now....maybe.

I won't be attending any more ethics lectures after this week's snorefest...they just repeated everything I had already read in the book, anyway. Def. skipping path tomorrow, too.

Marc, you really liked the heart sounds session? I heard the guy teaching it is kind of a dick. Was it real helpful? I'm scheduled for the 3-5 session tomorrow, and I don't think I'm going since they aren't taking attendance. Can I teach the stuff to myself on some of those websites?

They don't take attendance? I heard the guy was funny and kinda like Schwab (M1s, he'll be lecturing for you guys in block 4, I looked at your schedules because I really wanted to hear his hand and arm lecture again) -- monotone and sarcastic.

I'm still a compulsive class goer, so I'm sure I'll be in class.

I go to ethics cause I don't have the book and don't look at it all otherwise. This way at least I'll know what we're talking about in small group. But yeah, that guy is wordy. Lecture could be condensed to ~1/2 hour.

I liked Sebastian (sp?). I thought he was hilarious in that I'm gonna make fun of people and be sarcastic as hell kind of way. First lecture all year I've paid really any attention to. No they did not take attendance, but I thought it was really helpful and am glad I went. But, yeah, you probably could just teach yourself from websites. It was more an interactive session than lecture. Like Ashleigh, he reminded me of Schwab and that guy that taught some kidney stuff I think it was. In anatomy. Forgot his name. The one that repeated the important stuff 1700 times thick with sarcasm. You know...

Dr. Duenk...he was the schiz.
