MCW Class of 2010, Part 3

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Dr. Sebastian is fantastic... totally hilarious in that completely sarcastic way. I heart him.

Listen to whatever Don says about anything, kids, Don is (as far as I know) our top board scorer in our class. So yeah... he's a whole lot smarter than I... (sorry, Don, I outed you, but I won't tell them about that other thing 😳)

Marc, I'm taking it you're not coming to class? I even brought the cardiac auscultation CD and booklet. =þ Are you coming to micro?

EDIT: there are like 50 people here for the path lecture. Dr. Teggatz didn't look too happy at the turn out.

I'll be there in time for micro. maybe.

right now my t cells are waging war.

Do you guys realize that in this thread we've more than doubled the number of posts in the MCW Class of 2009 thread? I wonder when someone will start a class of 2011 thread that we can promtly co-opt. Is today an early decision interview day?

I could get used to this not going to class thing...too bad I've barely done anything study-wise so far today.

I think early decision is 2 weeks b4 the real interviews start, so that'll be like mid/late september. then the 2011 thread can be started, and we can make it the pseudo-2009 thread.

path was a major waste of time. Over half the slides were not in the notes. All of the questions will come from Chap 6 in Robbins.

Well, it's Friday of Labor day weekend. Whattya expect. That reminds, how's the studying going M1s?

His class made me sick, that's why i wasn't there.

I guess I have to start wearing my military surplus gas mask more often.

I figured you all were posting in the 2010 thread because you were planning on retaking Neuro.

What was the deal on that anyway? I've heard people saying things about last year's neuro class.

I just got about 8000 pages of stuff from my big sib. Lord knows what he put in there. It's seriously about 10 inches think of paper.

Just went through the macBaby software, went around to everyone's cadavers (after last night's practice practical went more poorly than I'd thought it would), and I need to go work on biochem and/or anatomy (muscular innervations and arterial supply is gonna kill me). I'm so not going out tonight. When I'm done studying, I'm just gonna watch a movie with the wife or something....

If you had been in lecture yesterday, you'd know why most people weren't there. Today was worse, and I thought maybe I could get something out of it. There was nothing to be gotten except that all the info we need to know is in Robbins chapter 6. Pratik and I were looking for methods to ease the pain. We also didn't get a break. The lecture notes were deceivingly short... about 6 pages, but there were about 50 (literally) slides she didn't give us.

I'm making 1/2 of the page of my 1/2 to 1 page outline for medical ethics my title. I have a feeling it might not go over well.

It's going okay. The practice lab final was very helpful. I finally started skipping Devo and it's true, the lectures sound a lot better on Windows Media at double speed. Still have biochem to tackle, and then it's all odds and ends.

Maybe.

Unless it isn't.

Long, lovely weekend ahead! Actually, I'm pretty happy about having three days to study during which NO NEW INFORMATION will be coming at me. (Edited to add🙂 It's my new definition of weekends.

Yay!

Best wishes on those tests, guys!!

yah, I'm kinda freaking out a bit. 🙁 are all the M2 exams a week after ours?

We have micro the next monday, and path & psych the week after that. Did I tell you how much I love having 2 weekends ruined by exams instead of one?

Why are you freaking out? You're a bright guy, and if your library appearances are any indication, you study a lot more than I do. You'll be fine.

Isn't it great? Along with the great lecturers, M2 year sure is great.

I thought chap 6 for the immune path was going to be short... it's nearly 70 pages long. *sigh*

Please note: I am having fun learning the stuff, and I wouldn't want to redo first year again.

cuz I also use the Internet in the library, but I'm only coming online in 2-5 minute segments right now.

And being smart alone doesn't get all that info into yer noggin. I'm considering getting some pathways laser-inscribed on the insides of my eyelids, or at least contacts with the info written on them.

Maybe I should be glad I'm too cheap to buy a laptop. Of course, I can always surf at home. 😉

The pathways per se aren't so bad; it's the sobering fact that Dr. Dahms seems to want you to remember the specific names of more of the stupid little sugars than I hoped. Stupid Glc-NAC! I mean Gal-NAC! I mean....pooey.

Back to studying.

If anybody wants to hit the library or the nerd rooms with me early Sunday evening or anytime Monday and kick around biochem, let me know. I'll be on it like white on rice.

Wikipedia is a gold mine for explaining a lot of the stuff she flew right through.

I'm too cheap to buy a laptop as well - that's why I commandeered my wife's laptop since she can just use my desktop any time she wants. This beast is over four years old, doesn't even have integrated wireless (so if I'm smart, I leave the wireless card at home), and is running XP, Office, Winamp and Firefox. That's it.

Looked at Wikipedia for a couple of things already, and I agree, it's just about the right depth for med school biochem. But really, most of the tricky details in her practice questions are in things she DID say. (OHH, myristolation occurs on the cysteine at the N-terminus of the amino acid, not the C-terminus. It's farnesylation that takes place on the C-terminus. Thanks, Dr. D.)

XP, Office, Winamp, and Firefox...well, what else do you really need?

I'm thinking of asking Dr. Sabina to make the practice questions unlimited attempts instead of single attempts so they can be re-used as a study aid to test progress--like the way the DEVO questions are (I think it's the DEVO questions. This business of covering the answers with an envelope is getting old fast. What do you think?

Note: Tomorrow is Saturday Beta. This means that you will be studying from N terminus toward the C terminus and you'll only pause while isomerizing a cup of coffee or polymerizing yesterday's food into the lumen of the toilet. Flushing requires hydrolysis of ATP.

Quiz question:

Why direction is the toilet paper unrolled post-isomerization?

very wise....undersiding it could result in accidental uncoupling of the paper from the roll. I learned that the hard way <sigh>

My parents used to have to underside it because their cat would manually uncouple the paper from the roll if it were hung overhand. This is why I will never ever own a cat.

I think they'd change it if you asked.

where are you gonna study tomorrow night?

Not sure, but probably the library, sometime after 5:00 (I have a performance at the Highland Games today from noon to 4:00ish).

Yeah, enjoy that little bit of scheduling genius.

Highland games as in Scottish stuff? They do that here? If so, that's awesome. What do you do at it?

HIghland games are in Waukesha County Fair Grounds yesterday and today. There's also another Highland Games at Heidelberg State Park on the East Side the first weekend in June.

What I do is Scottish Country dancing, which we do on Monday nights: http://milwaukeescd.org. Come anytime! 🙂

Except Labor Day. We're not dancing on Labor Day.

That'd be funny, if the next time I went back to England and my friends got me to go to a Ceilidh I could do the Scottish dances.

As of right now, I don't need anything else to distract me. =( I'm just starting to be able to study normally again. The question of when I'll be locking myself in a nerd room for hours though, is still up in the air.

Wouldn't it be cool if hobbies didn't take up any time? 🙁

quick question for M2s, how many people failed biochem in your class and was this due to lack of studying or the exams being ridiculously tough?

I don't know of anyone from the class that failed biochem. The exams aren't ridiculously hard if you study for them. Block 2 was definitely hard, and when I didn't do as well as I wanted, it's because I didn't study as well as I should've.

as I go through the old exams, some of the questions are extremely detailed. This is discouraging because its impossible to know every little fact.

Awww, I was hoping you were doing the caber toss or the hammer throw.

I don't, but apparently today they also had a haggis toss. Unfortunately, I was dancing and wasn't able to participate. 🙁

I just want to say that I hate fungus. It has infected over a quarter of my cell plates for my experiment. What a lot of time wasted, especially since I"ve been doing all this work since school began. grrrr. I'd better be able to do something to go to the conference over in Oahu -- before my parents leave Maui. =(

End rant.

Denise, just a haggis toss? Not a haggis eating contest?
