MCW Class of 2010, Part 3

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It was quite plainly stated by the registrar, Ms. Lesley Mack, that although colleagues even on the same rotation as you may be getting their grades in, do not assume your grades are available until an email is issued to your Medical College of Wisconsin email (mcw.edu) account clearly stating so.

We expect no further questions on the matter.

The Overseers
I no, write?

That's why I would never ask her.

SWEET. Everybody else just get the e-mail about this year's big drunk fest in the snow? I'm surprised that the $100 doesn't include unlimited condoms too.

how about some extra chlorine for that legendary hot tub?

oh, man, this cultural competency module in peds is painful. it's got these pre-recorded lectures and powerpoints.

Oh, I see. Latinos have a RELAXED sense of time, which is a "nice" (paternalistic) way to say Mexicans are going to be late for their appointments. 🙄

I had someone explain to me once that it's important to understand "manana" does not mean "tomorrow". It means "not today". Now that's some cultural competence right there.

haha, had another SP that I recognized. Fortunately it wasn't for something embarassing - it was just the peds well-child check, but the mom was a girl I went to high school with for a semester or so (she came and left). We both recognized each other as soon as I walked in.

The other SP I knew was one of my dad's college buddies. I'm never gonna escape this county. 😛

But it should be interesting when I've got an actual patient that I know...

ugh, that makes me thankful that I grew up on the other side of the state.

Um, it wasn't a bad thing. My brother had a huge crush on her older sister and went with her to the school's junior/senior banquet.

edit- just went and looked on my facebook. I was already friends with her  completely forgot about that.

holy crap, the parking situation down here sucks horribly now. they plowed the streets, but there's literally 3 feet of snow blocking in all the cars that are parked, including, um, mine.

Oh, man. Two months of inpatient medicine, a month of gen surg, 5 weeks of trauma surg Q4 overnight call, a month on blue team (what Thanksgiving break?), and now finally a few weeks of outpatient, I have to say, this peds shelf will be getting all I have to give. Which is not much.

Has anyone heard anything about the OB Shelf results?

Actually, there is no shelf exam. Your grade is 50% ability to use Rumi manipulator/ rectal dominator without falling asleep and 50% how moody the residents are the day they do your eval. ha. really.

2. indo

Marijuana, specifically modern crossbreeds of Indonesian (hence, "Indo") indica strains with western sativa, resulting in pungent, broadleafed, THC-crystal laden buds, or "trees". Often confused for a short form of "indoor", which is where most of this type of marijuana is now grown.
Rollin' down the street, smokin' Indo, sippin' on gin and juice.

ugggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg i am bored.

I would've been, but I went skiing to alleviate the boredom. Mt. Bohemia is awesome, but I doubt it fulfils the school's criteria for the beerfest they like to throw.

yeah i wuz like ohsnap1

Hmmm, my entire EM rotation is about 72 hours long. I've got nine shifts about 8.5 hours each, and that's it. There's some grand rounds and STAR center sessions, but that's it. I put in that many hours each week on trauma, easily.

I love that they have me at the STAR center from 9-12p one day, and then I'm in the ER from 11p-7a that night.

Oh, wait, I missed the shifts listed on the side. So about 100 hours total. Interesting.

Do you all remember the advice sessions with Dr. Olds? How much of what he says ends up being beneficial?

ours were with Dr. Hayes, because Olds was busy with something else at the time, and I thought they were pretty good. If you've been reading SDN all along, there probably won't be much new information, but a lot of our class has no idea how things work. He asked if anyone knew how the match worked, and I was the only one who raised my hand.

freak.

I was at an interview today, and during lunch the residents had to explain to one of the applicants how the match worked and how to rank an advanced program with a supplemental list for prelim/TY programs associated with it. It was a forehead-smacking moment for me...

(this girl exuded the ditzy blonde personality, though...not surprised that she didn't know)

you have got to be f'ing kidding me.

i, for once, agree with prowler. didn't learn anything new d/t reading sdn, but i was amazed how uneducated members of our class were in regards to scheduling 4th year, the match, etc.

I wish I were...I felt like her stupid questions were reflecting badly on the rest of us applicants as a group.

Sounds like a girl from my MCAT class

Some physics formula was up on the board, but for simplicity 12*4=48

"What does the dot between the two numbers mean?"

She also talked about how her cat got "spaded" at one point.

She tried to get into just about every study group, and one finally let her in, and I don't think she ever showed up.

There was tons more stuff, but unfortunately, I've forgotten it.

Yeah, I just assumed some of this was common knowledge by this point. After I said I understood how the match worked, Dr. Hayes was like "Go ahead and explain it then." So I gave the basics of the match, and he was like "Yeah, that's pretty much it" and moved along. He asked how I knew, so I just said "the Internets, lol."

and another busy day on psych consults at the VA. zzzzzzzzz. 😀

I'm trying to get some reading done.

Dude, I was friggin' busy on that service.

So what exactly happens if one fails pharm? Does anyone know exactly when and where they send you and for how long? Will it mess with boards/rotations?

🙁

Um, two of your classmates used to be my classmates until they failed pharm. I think that's all it took. 🙁

You didn't fail.

Wait until you see how crappy you feel after step I.

I felt great after step 1, until I got my score and I cried when I saw my score because it was 20 points lower than what I thought I got. I thought it was the easiest test I had ever taken.

Step 2, however, I didn't care, and I knew I didn't fail, and that I'd be OK.

nice. my little sister just tested positive for swine flu, and my brother, who was around her for several days while she was sick, just left for boot camp. And I was around her for a while on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday....and I work in a hospital. Oink oink.

OSCEs are still stupid. the bosce grade I got had no comments....just 1 single penciled in oval with pass next to it.

today, pediatrics. ugg.

peds OSCE sucked. one of the SPs played "hard to get" the whole time.

That's the case where you're supposed to slap the patient across the face to get them to tell you stuff. For serious.
