Mcw Class Of 2011 Awesome Part 3!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
See now, just the fact that they wrote "skillz" shows that they are not true ninjas. A true ninja is unafraid of proper spelling and punctuation. In fact, Webster himself was a ninja and actually assassinated the person that came up with the "i before e except after c" rule because they were dispensing ancient ninja spelling secrets to the mass public.

I do agree, however, that being an IM doctor takes ninja skills.

:laugh::laugh: @ entire post.

Time for bed...goodnight, moon.

I had a ninja roll last night. It was good.

OMG i can't STOP shopping!!!!!!!

lol i bought a skirt and a couch and they MATCH!!! hahaha...i didn't even buy them at teh same place!

You can even use loan money for that kind of stuff. It's basically free money, right?

I'd say most students don't even take out loans.

what's money? i just use those plastic thingy's they put in my mailbox.

Holy crap! the 2011'rs are starting soon.

I'm honestly amazed that it's been 2 years since I was freaking out about starting. The good news is the first 2 years go by pretty fast. The bad news is you're 2 years older when it's done.

good luck, guys!

Holla. Any advice? Stuff to study up on, attendings to watch out for, hints for interacting with patients/nurses, etc?

Yes. Love the vagina like it is your own

Xandie/Don....you know who in your class told 2 seperate pts that their baby was dead (even though they were told not to after the first incident) when they couldnt find FHT without consulting anyone else? Residents were tell us about them....it was a female and had ob/gyn towards the end

No idea, but great story.

I'll ask around.

the first 2011 thread was started by LadyLuck, who will be in that class

Not anymore, unfortunately 🙁
Offer of admission was rescinded in June. long story, many contributing factors. I just wish they'd give me back my deposit.

Wow, I'm so sorry to hear that! I hope that things are going ok for you and everything works out for the best in the end. 🙁

So this is a little off topic, but I arrived into town a couple of days ago and I am a bit confused about when a u-turn is allowed. I have seen signs at some lights that say no u-turns, but many of them do not say anything. Is it safe to assume that if there is not a sign it is okay to make a u-turn at traffic lights? Any thoughts on this from those of you who have grown up driving here? Thanks!

I've been told you can't do a Uturn at controlled intersections. So basically only in left turn lanes that don't say no Uturn, and don't have a stop sign or traffic light.

I miss the days of Uturns wherever unless it says you can't. I just googled Uturns in WI and found their traffic laws.

346.33 Where turns prohibited, exception. (1) The
operator of a vehicle shall not turn the vehicle so as to proceed in
the opposite direction upon a highway at any of the following
places:
(a) At any intersection at which traffic is being controlled by
traffic control signals or by a traffic officer;
(b) In mid−block on any street in a business district, except
where the highway is a divided highway and where the turn is
made at an opening or crossover established by the authority in
charge of the maintenance of the highway.
(c) In mid−block on any through highway in a residence district,
except where the highway is a divided highway and where
the turn is made at an opening or crossover established by the
authority in charge of the maintenance of the highway.
(d) At any place where signs prohibiting such turn have been
erected by the authority in charge of the maintenance of the highway.
(2) The operator of a vehicle shall not back the vehicle into an
intersection at which turns are prohibited by sub. (1) (a) for the
purpose of turning the vehicle so as to proceed in the opposite
direction upon the highway.
(3) In this section, “mid−block” means any part of a street or
highway other than an intersection.
History: 1971 c. 203; 1991 a. 316.

My wife and I argued about the "no u-turns at controlled intersections" thing for a long time. I finally had to whip out the statute you cited there to get her to agree with me that they're illegal.

If you've been driving on Hwy 100 (108th St), meg2hoop, the reason all of the median breaks have no U-Turn signs is that Hwy 100 was a notorious "cruising" street, and they had to enact the no U-turn policy there to try to curb the amount of people who would just drive up and down the street all night showing off their pimped out cars. You will definitely get busted by the cops doing a u-turn on that street at night.

I'm so sorry to hear that too. Can you request a deferment or something? In any case, I wish you the best.

I'm also a newcomer to town and have two questions. 1- Why are the roads here so bumpy? Does it have to do with the heavy winter? 2- It is my understanding that students from out-of-state cannot be considered for in-state residency. So, is it necessary to change the license plates or get a Wisconsin driving license? As always, thanks for your inputs.

1. Yes, the winters and the accompanying snow plows do a number on the roads. It makes bicycling fun, as does Wauwatosa's inexplicable yearly ritual of spreading gravel all over the darn streets.

2. As long as it is logistically feasible for you to renew your license and plates at home, it is not necessary for you to switch to Wisconsin plates and license. My roommate now has a Wisconsin license only because she lost her home license and there was no way for her to nip home and get a new one.

I was stopped, for speeding, by a police officer on Tuesday. After giving him my documents, including my drivers licence (NJ), he responded with "get a Wisconsin License."

The problem with having an out of state license/plates is that you A) will be more likely to get pulled over and B) will get asked what you're doing in Wisconsin if you do get pulled over. Your options at that point involve lying to policemen (not recommended by your friendly neighborhood SMS) or telling the truth and getting yelled at by policemen (again, probably a bad plan). So, my advice is to just get Wisconsin documents. I don't really understand why people want out of state plates, I've never gotten pulled over in my own state.

Also, I came onto this page to post something because I'm bored, and ended up wanting to weigh in. But otherwise, this is really just a post to say "I have the best surgical sub-I ever. I am off this weekend. I was off last weekend. I am off next weekend. And I only worked 60 this week." Envy me, munchkins.

(Yes, I'm losing my mind. But that's okay, I have pretzels and frosting).

Nah, it's because they do the worst job ever of patching roads. I saw a guy with a shovel throwing new asphalt on a pothole. Not smoothing it out, not being remotely tidy about it, just throwing it on the road.

Did you get a ticket?!

ugh, went to State Fair with my wife, sister (18, good-looking, which is relevant to the story....), brother and his girlfriend. Things were going well, until some sh$%stain selling mops at one of the booths starts talking to my sister. At first I thought he was just trying to move some product, but then he says something like "Hey, weren't you with that Girls Gone Wild tour.....? hyuk hyuk" I walked back over by her and the wifey and just started pulling them away, and the guy starts saying "Aww, don't listen to him...." so I just flipped him off and walked away.

My older brother walks past the booth a little while later (we told him what happened) and snaps a picture of the guy  the guy musta RAN down the aisle because he comes around the other corner with his Vivitar piece of junk camera and snaps a picture of my brother. At this point, we both started yelling at him for being such a waste of flesh and not to ever talk to my sister again like that. He was like "Urrr, c'mon guyssss, state fair's fun....I'm just having fun here....."

I guess I don't expect too much out of the losers selling mops at state fair, but this guy pissed me off. He looked/sounded drunk too. Ugh.

/rant the horses and chickens and cream puffs were all good though. So many ugly people though 😛

This is my favorite picture from Greek fest. I especially love the pink ribbon around her shoes that perfectly matches her shirt (or lack thereof). The best part about fairs is the people watching. That and the stupid songs they come up with to get you to play their games, "water race water chase, water fun with a gun, first to rise guaranteed to win a prize."

We had a carnie on the consult service this week who was working at the State Fair. He had some vague complaints of intermittent arm and leg numbness, but we think he just didn't want to work in the heat and humidity this week.

OMG those pictures are so funny!!!!! that's you ashers??? lol!

i can't believe that lady wearing that junk! ick!

almost time for orientation! new school and start so should I dye my hair? it's pretty much how it looks in the picture but i always thought about trying a more strawberry blonde type thing. what do you guys think? 😕😕😕

if the first thing on your DDx is that he's making it up, you should be ashamed of yourself!!! FOR SHAME!!!!

always put drug abuse first. THEN list that they're making it up.

I always have malingering with all it's various pertubations 1st (get out of jail free, I heart narcs, sue the company) etc. If they start yelling at me, I add on tourettes.

So my parents and siblings are finally on their Hawaiian cruise vacation. This is the vacation that they had to postpone last December when I diagnosed my sister with a spontaneous pneumothorax (well, okay,I didn't diagnose her, but I called it a possible PTX and urged my mom to take her to the doctor) because the doctor said she shouldn't fly with a PTX. They finally get to Hawaii this week, and there's a hurricane on the way! There's only been like 5 hurricanes in Hawaii since 1950, and they pick the week that the 6th one is coming.

Somehow I have a feeling I'll get blamed for this. My dad is harboring some resentment for the fact that I was the reason they found the PTX and couldn't go last winter, even though she would have probably been fine on the flight. Oh well.

lol, we considered that too. Had already ruled out stroke/TIAs and seizure. As long as his cervical MRI came back clean on Friday, I'm pretty sure he was just a lazy bum.

They usually fizzle out. Last time they're was anything near a hurricane was right after I moved there, and we have gusty winds up to 70mph. Nothing else. They usually fizzle. Iniki was the last one. There was some warning in 2000, but that turned into nothing too.

I just looked at weather.com's satellite, I didn't see anything that even resembled a hurricane. Where's it supposed to be coming from? Northeast or Mexico? If it's the NE, Kauai'll probably be the only place affected. Nothing much to lose there, they're still trying to rebuild post-Iniki. SW, don't think there's been much that's reached us except rain.

Edit: also good idea to not get sick while in HI. Health care = craptacular. And the hospital on maui = waaaaaaay outdated.

Edit again: Maui News saved the day... Hurricane Flossie, what a dumb name for something that's not gonna do anything most likely. The pics with the article are the beach by my house.

Strawberry blonde is a great color. I recommend going within a shade of the color of your roots, so if you get slammed with studying you won't be worrying as much about touchups.

Can anyone recommend good running paths/routes in the area? I am living on North Ave near 100th, so something close to there and/or school would be great.

Thanks

I don't know how long a route you want, but near school you can head east and south through the visitor parking lot and out onto Portland, then head up and down 68th and 70th if you need some good hills. School is around 87th Or you can head east along Plank Road towards Hart Park. When the Honey Creek Parkway bridges are back up, you can pick up Honey Creek Parkway, which winds around all over the place (just run in the street; we all do it) from Hart Park to Jacobus park, a little park full of little nature trails and stone steps, which is a nice break from a normal street run.

I'm a slow runner still building up distance and live south and east of campus, so I don't know what's good in your neighborhood.

The 2011'ers start tomorrow.

I think I'm going to have to go over to the college and do some people watching.

I think I'm going to have to go over to the college and do some people watching.

I'll be on campus studying after work and maybe if I get a few minutes off to buy a new reflex hammer. Hopefully people will still be wandering around dazed when I get done, or that my attending lets me go early to study for neuro and psych. Too bad the library's still on summer hours though.

Oh, and I believe my team's pt was sent to the floor from the CICU on Saturday. Not sure if we've sent anyone to the MICU since I've been at the NICU. I know we've had a lot of overflow to the SICU recently.

First years make me feel old. I may also wander over to campus between cases... I have a third year on my service starting tomorrow. Yay for division of labor.

I'll be roaming through in the afternoon to hand over a cookie tin and my old pharmacology cards. hope to see some of you new folk there!

if you see someone with a short white coat wearing no tie and the sleeves rolled up a-la Dr. Cox, that's probably me.

Are you gonna get one of them thar fancy neurologist reflex hammers?

Yes. Being able to get more than the biceps, brachioradialis and patellar reflex may be a good thing when I have ortho in Nov. My attending spent 10 min on Friday making fun of Javad's, mine, and my residents reflex hammers.

The M4 on my team said he had gotten a neuro one last year and it's been really helpful.

So what is the standard dress code for test taking days during third year. Both tests this week (psych/neuro) are being held in an area where we will be seen by other staff members, and possibly by patients. Does that mean we need to dress up a little, or can we come in shorts/t-shirt?
