MCW-Milwaukee

Pros:

Cheaper (although not by much about 40k cheaper total)
More opportunities for research
Children's hospital is very well known
I like some of the scholarly pathways makes the curriculum interesting

Cons:

Unranked on USNWR when previously used to be ranked
No neurology rotation (something I am really interested in)
Not as much service opportunities as Wayne

Wayne State

Pros:

Lots of opportunity for service
Doctor I scribed for that went there said there is a very diverse patient population and a great place to learn, they talk highly of the MD program
Seems like Detroit has cheaper cost of living
Higher ranked than MCW on USNWR

Cons:

Cost more
Very large class size
Detroit does not seem as intriguing of a city as Milwaukee

Note: I am OOS for both

Unranked just means that the school didn’t submit its info to US News. It’s not a pro or con. There is no real ranking difference between MCW and Wayne State.

Based on what you wrote, I would go to MCW. You can always seek out your own service opportunities. Plus it’s cheaper.

I would say MCW. When MCW submitted its info for ranking in years past, it was usually T50-60. You can also choose to do an elective in Neurology if it is something you want. Wayne State has had a bit of bad publicity lately and seems to be going downhill.

I did not know that meant they did not submit their info, good to know! Thank you for the advice!

Yeah, I have been keeping an eye out on the publicity for Wayne. Thank you for your advice!

What happened at Wayne that's making it go downhill?

@confused-- Wayne has a very rocky relationship with the Detroit Medical Center (DMC), which is one of their main affiliated hospitals. Last year, the DMC banned Wayne State pediatricians from treating patients there. They have also faced accreditation issues in the past for a lack of diversity within their class. However, Wayne's relationship with the Henry Ford Health System (their other main affiliated hospital system) appears to be very strong so their clinical sites are still really solid.

Edit: while these things do seem worrisome, I don't think they necessarily mean the school is going "downhill". It's still a fantastic school with great clinical exposure and many opportunities for both community outreach and research.
