Hello! I've posted this in a few of the other forums, but figured I'd post it here too. I am almost finished with an MPH program and will be applying to med school in the next year or two. I know that I want to go to med school and become a physician, but I'm concerned about how much I'll get to utilize my public health education as a physician. I'm interested in hearing from anyone a little further along on the MD/MPH career path about any things I should do, tips, advice, career moves etc that I should consider in order to be able to maintain a public health component in my career. If it matters, I think I'll probably end up going into family med or primary care of some form. Thanks for any advice!

Hello. I am not that much "further along", but I received my MPH already and will be matriculating into medical school next academic year (class of 2021). There are opportunities to utilize your MPH, especially since you would like to go into FM or Primary Care. Even if it is not a set career or job title, you will know the importance of PCPs, preventative care, etc. which may guide your treatment. If anything, your MPH may assist you in certain research questions you're interested in pursuing.

Out of curiosity, were you able to pick a concentration? (i.e. my concentration was biomedical science)

Your concentration may help direct further questions.

Thank you for the response! My department is Behavioral and Community Health and I will also have a certificate in global health (although I'm not sure I want to work abroad and I don't anticipate this being very helpful).

Soon to be MD, MPH here. Congratulations your MPH will really help you get into medical school and was a smart move. After that happens, don't waste anymore time. There's nothing you can do with an MD, MPH that you can't do with an MD and a textbook of your choice.
