Hi all,

I'm currently retaking some undergrad courses that I've done poorly in. I understand that DO schools do grade replacement and count the higher grade only while calculating GPA. My gpa without grade replacement is around 2.7 and with grade replacement, 3.3. I was just wondering how MD schools look at undergrad GPA if I go to an SMP after.
1) Do SMPs look at grade replacement?
2) How much does undergrad GPA weigh in to med school admissions if I end up going to an SMP?
3) Will I still have a chance at MD schools if I do an SMP? or are they out of the question at this point (because no grade replacement?)

Thank you for all your help!

To add to Gonnif a tiny bit, I've seen people with low uGPAs fall into the trap thinking that they will just ace the SMP and then they'll be set. It's not easy, and a 2.7 uGPA does not predict great success (but yes of course there are other factors at play). If you enroll in an SMP and do poorly you face a very uphill battle. On the other hand you could do grade replacement over time and become a pretty competitive applicant, although just for DOs. The SMP is a risk, and you should think about that before enrolling in one.

Just something to keep in mind

MD is possible though not highly probable. DO may be difficult as well, but at the moment, there is still a path to that

I was just wondering why you would say that DO is still a difficult option. With grade replacement, isn't 3.3 a relatively acceptable gpa for DOs?

What state are you in? Some state schools are easier to get into vs others.

It's acceptable, but you want a fairly decent MCAT score (507+) with it if you want to get into one of the established schools.

just because your GPA will improve does not take away your older reported grades that the adcom will see. they still can imfluence adcome decision

I thought that AACOMAS application just sees the highest grade, doesn't it?

There are MD schools that reward reinvention, when one aces (GPA 3.7+) the SMP or post-bac, AND aces the MCAT (33+ on the old exam). You can get a sense of these by looking in MSAR at the # of matriculants at a school who have post-bac coursework and/or a graduate degree. Examples include Dartmouth, NYMC and Drexel.

State schools will give the most slack.

My, how things have changed in the week since this post was started! Haha, AACOMAS really sprung that change on us didn't they?
