MD and DO concurrently?

Ok, I know this must have already been asked and it's buried somewhere in this sea of threads... does it hurt your chances at DO schools if you apply for MD schools concurrently? How about vice versa? I'm not using it as a backup... I just want to be a doctor!

No, as long as you understand the DO philosophy, and be prepared to answer questions at interviews about it.

It was not in my interviews. I went to 4 DO interviews and applied to MD schools. They asked why DO and why both but nothing about residency.

Ok, I've heard that too... that you can do an allopathic or osteopathic residency if you go to DO school. But you can only do allopathic if you go to MD school. DO seems more flexible, then... but now I'm confused... if you go to DO school and do an MD residency... what do you get when you're done? An MD or a DO? Does it affect you in any way to go the dual route?

After your 4th year of school, you graduate and become MsEvolution D.O.

Whether you go for an allo or osteo residency program you do not change your degree. Some specialities are hard to find in a osteo residency so that is why people apply to allo. Allo has many many many more programs to choose from also.

During the interview it is highly doubtful that they are going to ask you about allo/osteo residency because they are more concerned about your past and your reasons for entering an osteo school. Plus there is nothing negative about DO's going to allo residency. Sometimes you dont have a choice for example, I bet osteopathic neurosurgery programs are very rare.

I may end up posting this as a new thread... one of the specialties I'm attracted to is Endocrinology. But when I look at some websites, I never see this as a DO specialty. Could it be that it's lumped with something else? Is there a way to specialize in Endocrinology if you're in a DO program? This is the only think I'm worried about in applying to DO school. It's not the only specialty I am thinking about, but it's the only one that I don't see offered.

Endocrinology and others of the same ilk: nephrology, Rheumatology... are sub-specialties of IM. After you decide on the required IM pathway, you can then delve into a Fellowship in those aforementioned specialties, provided you get accepted to them...I think.

Many of our lectureres in the medicine sub specialties were DO endocrinologists, urologists, surgeons (ortho, optho, general urology, etc etc). The only MD who taught a huge part of a med course was for Pulm , and he happens to be the dean of something ... and chairs the curriculum committee...

so the letters after your name only have to do with what school you graduated from (not even what boards you took) . your specialty has to do with what you want to do in medicine.
