Does anyone know if MD schools can see if you applied to DO schools, and vice-versa? It seems like they wouldn't be able to know, but you never know.... Also, any thoughts on how MD schools would react to an applicant applying to DO as well?

Know, they don't have any way of knowing if you don't tell them.
Its up to you if you mention you are applying to DO schools-it depends on where you really want to get in. Most likely they will not bring it up.

well. if you are applying to a DO school.. they will ask you if you are also applying to MD school. They want to know how sincere people really are about getting into DO program. I think you should be honest.. if your intentions are real... no prob. In theory people should NOT use DO schools as a back up for MD program rejection. Unfortunately no lie detectors can tell the difference.

Are you sure about this? Where have you interviewed that you were asked that question?

I don't think that applying to both DO and MD schools means that you are not serious about both. Schools don't get offended when they know you apply to more than just one school, so why should applying to a range of schools hurt you?
I personally am applying to DO, MD and Masters programs. I will make my decision based on a number of factors-how I feel about the school, location, price, residency opprtunities, how well I think I would fit in there-how impressed I was by the school, staff and students.

I'm curious to know if all DO schools will ask you if you are also applying MD, I'd never heard this before.

I think most of them are known to ask if you're applying MD, but that doesn't mean that they don't take you as being a serious DO applicant if you are. Most people applying to DO schools also apply to MD schools.

Yposh,

Just to clarify.. I see how it can be misread ...
You are right.. you can be serious about both.. and the bests advice is be honest. You prob aleardy look at the interview section of SDN.. there they have many questions that they are likely to ask.

They want to know how sincere people really are about getting into DO program.
This sentence should be taken out... or read on its own.. and not in continuation.

either way.. relax... and good luck

i cant remember whose secondary it is...but they ask you to list every program MD or DO that youre applying to. i imagine that adcoms would rather see you apply to DO schools but its nothing they havent seen before. im applying to both. the way i see it is that if i get into an MD school good...DO good....and DO will give me some training in extra stuff i can use on patients. i think ultimately, whether you are an MD or DO, becoming a good physician depends on how you want to practice. i dont think that schools will be offended, as long as your intentions are to give 100% of yourself to your training.

Hhhmmm, I was never asked if I applied to MD schools as well as DO and vice versa.

Western U/COMP asks you what DO and MD schools you applied to on their secondary. I have an interview there so they may ask me that question.

I deleted my original posting... some of it may be misunderstood!

Some schools had it directly on the secondary.. and reviewing some of the interview feedback on SDN there I read many that were asked if they applied to MD schools... and few... which one would you choose?

Either way .. those of us having interviews will soon find out. The main point which I would like to keep, either related to this issue or other issues honesty is highly respected and appreciated by many.

My personal opinon is it doesn't matter if you will be an MD or a DO or any other doctor.. as long as it is something you enjoy doing and you provide the best to your patients. An example, Podietrist and dentist are amazing when we are in need of their assistance.. then again so is a bartender or a waitress when in need of that cold drink. Cheers!

Thats true, they do. I haven't heard of anyone else asking that in their secondaries, though. I thought it was a little wierd. My personal feeling is that its none of their business anyway-but then again, I feel that way about at least 50% of the questions they ask ( ). I think they are trying to get an idea of how serious you are about applying to that school, and I feel they should just come out and ask you that.

I'm not worried about DO schools asking me if I've applied to MD schools-my scores are higher than average at DO and either at or slightly lower than average for MD schools. It makes sense for me to apply to both, especially considering that I want to be an FP - so that's what I'm going to say at interviews. I have no idea what MD schools will ask or how they will feel about me applying to DO schools-but I'll just give 'em the same answer-and say that I haven't really seen much difference between the DO FPs and the MD FPs that I shadowed, except for the OMT. It makes little difference to me at this point, I'll be totally happy if I get in anywhere. :luck:

BTW-the one MD school I have interviewed at did not ask me if I applied to DO schools.

I do wonder why schools ask this type of question. Is it because they really want to know what schools they may be competing with or is it to see how you handle the question  .......???

Among other reasons. Perhaps they might not waste an acceptance on you if they felt you were just applying to their school as a safety net. For example- if you had applied to Yale, Harvard, U of M, had high MCAT scores, and tons of research, and applied to PhD/MD programs- if they were a school focusing on producing PCPs for their state-you'd be taking someone else's spot who just really wanted to be an FP doc. I have heard of people being denied admissions because of situations like this many times. Schools have to make sure you fit their profile-without skewing it too much.
