Just found this podcast and listened to this episode. While osteopathic medical school is not without its challenges, this really highlights some worse challenges Caribbean med students face relative to DO students. I thought this would be useful for people considering both paths.

Mods: if you feel this would be helpful for the Caribbean sub forum please feel free to post it there. I don’t want it to seem like im trying to offend anyone over there though.

I can't believe that in 2025 people are still debating if they should go to DO or the Caribbean. The DO pathway is very well established and provides much better benefits for any student
The allure of having an MD after your name is just that great. The general public still has no clue what a DO is. People hear osteopathic medicine and think we treat people with herbs and essential oils. Those that do know what a DO is think we’re off brand knock off MDs.

I don’t see this issue going away anytime soon. Some students would still rather go Caribbean than have a DO after their name.

I would tend to agree overall. But when you read the nonsense going on at some of these newer DO schools, it makes it seem like it’s just as hard but you also have 2 sets of board exams.

Even with that in mind though, things like this podcast are useful to see the disadvantages of Caribbean schools. For example, it’s ridiculous that programs with grads from SGU wouldn’t take an SGU student for a rotation who passed her boards first time for rotations in the least competitive specialty.
