Hey everyone, I know the topic of MD/JDs has been discussed before, but I was just wondering whether anyone currently on the boards is participating in such a program and can give me some of their impressions right now. I don't know about other schools, but at the UofI Medical System, the MD/JD is actually conducted through the MSTP. Are there any people here doing a different MSTP at Illinois and can give me some of their impressions or feelings on how the program is run?

The program at U of I urbana-champaign does offer a MD/JD but it is not a MSTP program (no guaranteed federal funding). I don't know much about the MD/JD program but in general the Medical Scholars Program is run very well. It is so large that a lot of resources are devoted directly to the combined degree students.

UIUC MSP is an excellent program for doing an MD/JD. In some programs, dual degree students not doing a PhD are treated quite differently than those who are. The MSP is quite different in that it puts all of these dual degree students together.

Amanda Cuevas, the administrative assistant dean, runs the MSP like clockwork and is generally very helpful. She really takes care of the students.

With regard to being non-MSTP, I would not let this discourage anyone. UIUC will never have an MSTP grant because UIUC does not have a university hospital in Urbana-Champaign. They have been told this directly by NIGMS. However, they do their training at a community hospital. Students also have the opportunity to spend their fourth year rotations at other medical schools.

UIC, on the other hand, is attempting to acquire an MSTP grant. I believe they tried for the first time last year, and I believe they are reapplying. UIC traditionally has not been regarded as highly as UIUC in the sciences, but they are making incredibly improvements. As soon as the scientific component acquires some respect, I believe UIC will receive their MSTP grant. Training at Cook County General is an experience that few other schools can offer.

Thanks for the replies. I'll keep looking into the program as well as developments in the UofI's system regarding the program. 🙂

fyi: UIC is now an official MSTP program
