Hello,
so I have a strong interest in the area of pulmonology/immunology and I want an MPH because I want to combat pulmonary health disparities especially among minorities. MPH is not to boost up my medschool application.
I also want to see the people who experience pulmonary health problems and find ways to help alleviate their problems so I want to be a doctor. I also want to create medications to alleviate such problems so I think I want to be a researcher.
I'd like to think my epidemiology/clinical/basic science combination might do well with MPH/MD program. So now that you know my reasons here is the problem:
Though I am an upcoming Junior Neuorscience major (undergrad) my gpa is not looking so hot. I'm banking on graduating with between a 3.1-3.2 ogpa and maybe a 3.2-3.3 sgpa considering my gpa repair classes I plan to take the coming semesters. I'm hoping for a 30+ MCAT when I take it.
Pros:
I've done some good basic science research and have great recommendation letters (nothing published yet). I have a lot of volunteer work and shadowing. I have good extracurricular with the symphony orchestra and equestrian team. I'm also studying abroad in Australia and doing courses/research there. So everything else accept for my gpa and MCAT are looking good I think.
But what do I do about the gpa? Postbacc or SMP? And should I apply for MPH then go for MD or should I try for a dual degree?
I don't want to sound whiny or try to make a sob story but I am an AA female who does come from a disadvantage background BUT I won't let such labels deter my determination to become a doctor. I just don't want my passion and great ability to become a great doctor to be overshadowed by my low gpa.
Any suggestions?
