I'm interested in the MD/MPH program at some schools. So, I need to fill out both the SOPHAS for the MPH program, and secondaries separately? Do you need to be accepted to the medical school before you apply to the MPH/MD program?

Thanks.

For schools that offer the joint MD/MPH program, you don't need to fill out the SOPHAS. Usually they either just have you indicate you're interested in the dual degree program, or complete an additional essay on why you want an MPH, or something along that line. Other schools that offer the joint degree have you apply directly to the dept granting the MPH (usually done in January). Your best bet is to look at the website of each school you're applying to that offers such programs.

Now, if you're also applying to schools that don't offer a joint degree, it's not uncommon for students to take a leave of absence after M2 to pursue the MPH at another institution and then return to finish the program. Unfortunately, I think that for this option, it usually takes 2yrs (instead of 1yr in a joint-degree prgm) to complete the MPH (not an expert here, so someone else can chime in).

At the big Davis AMSA conference I went to this weekend, a M4 (with lots of time off in between) confirmed everything you just said, but also said that she convinced the MPH school to let her do some custom stuff to finish in 1 year =)

for george washington university, it says to fill out both the sophas and secondary app, but i'm confused as to how to actually put on either application that i'm interested in the joint program. I think I will just go e-mail the dude.

Does anyone know how exactly an application to a joint degree program is looked at?

For instance do you have better, worse, or equal chances at getting into an MD vs an MD/MPH program?

I know that you have to write additional essays usually, but I don't understand the process from the admissions end.

Any ideas?

You may find it fascinating that you can be board certified in preventative medicine (General Preventive Medicine, Aerospace Medicine, or Occupational Medicine) with a 2 year residency in which you would also receive an MPH. If you really like public health maybe you want to consider this option because if you spend one year doing an MPH while in medical school, unfortunately the residency still needs you to complete 2 years and pretty much have to do another MPH curriculum/thesis. Again this is only if you really like public health/preventative medicine.

So, if you want to go into clinical medicine such IM, Peds, or FM you can be dual board certified with an MPH having completed two separate residencies that would only take 5 years.
