Will applying MD/PhD at a school hurt your chances of getting in the MD there if you are rejected? People always tell me to finish my application early, so it seems like if you are rejected the application will be late.

i don't speak from personal experience, but as i understand it, you're correct. by the time they've decided to put you in the MD only pot, it's often too late for you to have a real shot. it's a tough thing to think about, and i wish all MD/PhD applicants a lot of luck considering the situation they're faced with!

I had a 3.4 and a 33. I sent my secondary application to Univ. of Illinois for MD/PhD in the beginning of december (really, really, late...especially with my crappy stats). I was interviewed two months later, got into MD AND PhD, but rejected from MD/PhD. Take it as you will.

if you don't get into md phd, most schools will consider you for md only. some will not (ie penn). for some, it will be too late for md only. it does not increase your chances and its not really a strategy thing. you need to have 2-4 years of research ish and a firm interest in being a PI with the understanding of why you need the md and the phd

wrong forum (try the md phd forum)

It depends on the school...

John hopkins basically rejects you automatically for MD if you get an MSTP rejection

University of Michigan: Although this only really affected me, I was the last person (probably) to receive a pre-interview MSTP rejection. They sent it mid December. At this point there were 25 MD interview offers available. Although I was probably close to receiving an automatic interview from the med school if they received my app in september when I sent it, I didn't get one of those last few spots.

not sure if it's a problem at any others

did you apply MSTP or MSP? I'm looking to apply to the PhD for MSP (already in MD Urbana track), and I'm looking at PhD in social science, wondering how competitive it is

Thanks guys, really helped a lot. I'll apply MD/PhD for some schools, and MD for others probably.

Depending on the depth of your research experiences (~2 years is the standard), you are competitive at any MD/PhD program. If you are interested in MD/PhD, only apply MD to schools that have MD/PhD programs that you dislike.

Quick note: Since it appears that you are interested in Biomedical engineering (i'm guessing from you mdapps), make sure not to apply mdphd to Cornell and U of Chicago. These schools do not have BME programs that you can do your phd with.

U of C doesn't have an engineering school, and Cornell doesn't let you go to the Ithaca campus.

Also, some schools let you do your phd at nearby schools.

Harvard-->MIT
Emory-->GA Tech
UCLA --> Cal Tech
Pitt--> Carnegie Mellon

There are probably others I can't think of at the moment

Annoyingly, I personally feel that there is a negative impact on your application if you apply to an MD/PhD program and are rejected. Some schools will tell you rather quickly and move your application, but most will simply hold on to it for months without giving you a decision and then tell you you are deferred to the MD only when it is clearly too late for you to get a fair assessment. If you apply smart and broadly, you should be alright though.

Happened to me at my state school. I was already in the PhD program (started in fall 2007) and I was basically just applying to add an MD. The MD/PhD program held my application until March 1st, then gave it to the med school. The med school was finished interviewing by then and I didn't stand a chance. Now, I'm getting my masters and applying to MD only. I lost a year, but now I have a better chance getting in elsewhere b/c I'll be graduating with a master's from here.

Medical College of Georgia is not MSTP, but their MD/PhD program takes oos applicants. They also let you do your PhD at GATech.

UNC allows your PhD to be at NC State. That's all I know about, but there are certainly others (including programs with their own BME division...).
