My brother will be starting his MD PhD program this summer. Any advice on what to get him as a gift?

I'd like for it to be medically related. thanks

Either

a) Gift certificate to his university bookstore, or

b) A nice stethoscope or oto/ophthalmoscope (or a doctor's bag or something similar)

That's what I'd like if my family were made of thoughtful people 🙄

I would also go with the stethoscope. The best known brand I know of is Littmanns. Those are very good quality, and what most med students use.

My parents got me a stethoscope, but what was even more fun was a hodge-podge of random stuff, like a penlight, bone/blood pens, tuning fork, reflex hammer, and an old-fashioned doctor's bag 😍 . They actually come in handy (except, of course, the doctor's bag, which I love but can't be caught dead with 😳 ).

damn what a good brother... i wish my bro would get me something this summer

an ipod or something else non medical related that he'd like... he'll have enough time to get the medical stuff later.

What a nice idea! Littman's stethoscope was my first big purchase in school (other than books), and it comes in many colors, including green and pink! I think for us, the only requirement was for it to have both a bell and diaphragm, so many models would work.

Or, does your brother only wear t-shirts all the time? If so, a few nice dress shirts would come in handy.

Also, you could sponsor his membership to the AMA.

Give him $200,000. All you have to do is convince him to drop the combined degree and go MD-only.

Some programs will pay for your equipment as well.

Buy your brother something which has nothing to do with science or medicine.

I would want medical related stuff. I think it just depends on the person though.

I'm starting an MD/PhD program in a couple of weeks (ahhh!) and I would want money, either in the form of cash or gift cards (Starbucks gift cards are medically related if that's where you do all of your studying...right?), or if it has to be something truly medical, a stethoscope would be nice, an interesting medically-related book (key word: interesting... not textbook-like), or something medical and funny, like the complete collection of infectious disease Giant Microbes that my best friend got me.

Again, if you just drop the PhD work and go straight MD you'll be able to give yourself a $200,000 gift.

But in all seriousness, this guy is right about the Starbucks card. If your friend likes to study there, a Starbucks card would be awesome. Put $100 on it and your problem is solved. Do you know how many cinnamon scones a person can buy for $100????

Your snide little remark was noted (and ignored) the first time; no need to keep repeating yourself in search of validation. 🙄

Those little microbes are great!

Although I don't know if I'd call Shigella "stomach ache" or Pertussis "cough."

Should be more like "agonizing diarrhea" and "painful, uncontrollable fits of whooping cough."

Hey now! It was a joke, not a snide remark. I was MD/PhD for a while, and decided it wasn't for me. Part of the reasoning was it was going to end up costing me a lot of money and I would end up doing exactly the same thing in life (that is, being a clinician)...it would just take me longer to graduate. I was trying to be funny, but apparently it was received incorrectly.

By the way, I have no need for validation here. This is, perhaps, the most lame place on the planet, dare I say the solar system, to try to receive validation.

Sorry that my comments were misconstrued.

By the way Browniegirl...I think your signature is hilarious.

Okay, no harm, no foul. I'm just being testy. 😀

And, by the way, I wrote them to request that they add Malaria, and they said it's in production and will be added to the site soon.

Score.

They should do STI's . . . syphilis would be a cute little twisty thing!

My family got me a set of Bose Quiet Comfort II headphones. They're amazing for drowning out any background noise in the library studying for exams, on the way to present at conferences, or in noisey labs.

Oh, and just to make sure you know I was joking with my previous post and not really slamming MD/PhD, you should know, my hero, Dr. Frasier Crane, is an MD/PhD.

Actually he's not my hero. I just love the show, though.
