Hi all,

Does anyone know if its possible to do an M.D./Ph.D. track in HPSP (I guess it would involve "deferrment" for the 2-3 years that one would do PhD because one would receive a stipend from his/her PI??

I'm not a USUHS, just a regular med school and I'm on Navy HPSP but I'm really thinking I want to MD/Ph.D.

Thanks!

I am also on Navy HPSP and from my understanding no you are not allowed to do MD/PhD. Once you are done with your 4 years they want you and they are not going to pay for anymore years. You can however go back to school at a later date to get your PhD on your own time. You might even get the Navy to pay for all or part of it. Sorry!

Would you want to deal with the insane commitment time that would follow? MD/PhD takes forever and for every year you are in school, you will be paying it back in active duty. You will most likely be doing little research during that time anyways.

From what I know, the military contracts scientists for research. So if you want to go the MD/PhD route, do it in the civilian world.

From what I understand, the very last Navy MD/PhD graduated in 2005. The Navy has since declined any more MD/PhD's since she began.
